The Ice Bucket Challenge is to promote awareness of the disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) – which is commonly known as Lou Gehrig‘s Disease. These videos went viral on social media platforms in 2014 and returned on August 1, 2015 to help establish as an annual event. These events are to bring awareness to the disease as well as for folks being challenged to donate money. So don’t just dump water over your head for a laugh, DONATE!
The most commonly known origin of this comes from Pete Frates, a Boston College baseball player and student who was diagnosed with ALS in March 2012. Pat Quinn, a friend of Frates who was also diagnosed with ALS in 2013, is also credited with creating the challenge.
Major League Baseball has picked up the 2015 campaign with each club to participate in the Challenge and then nominate another franchise.
“We are so thrilled and grateful to have every Major League Baseball team supporting us this year,” Frates told reporters.
The Braves accepted the Angles challenge on Wednesday as Jace Peterson, Jonny Gomes and Dale Murphy poured water over their head. Gomes challenged the Toronto Blue Jays, David Price and Josh Donaldson. Peterson challenged Aaron Sanchez and Ryan Goins. Murphy sent the challenge out to former Brave and fan favorite Chipper Jones! They now have 24 hours to post a video!
