VIDEO: Atlanta Braves Call Up Former/Newly Acquired Relief Pitcher Peter Moylan

The Atlanta Braves announced on Sunday morning that they have called up relief pitcher Peter Moylan.  The 36-year-old was signed by the Braves on March 5, 2015 to be a “player coach”/relief pitcher.  Well…he’s pitched good enough in the minors and the Braves are in much need of help in their bullpen.

Moylan is actually on his path back to the majors after having a second Tommy John surgery.  Not only has Moylan had two TJ surgeries, he’s also had shoulder surgery and major back surgery.

The 6’2″, 225 pound right-handed has an eight year career in the big leagues and pitched previously with the Braves from 2006 – 2012.  His most prosperous years in Atlanta were in 2009 and in 2010 when he appeared in 87 and 85 games respectively with an ERA south of 3.00 in both seasons.  He has a career ERA of 2.80 with a 1.322 WHIP, 213 strikeouts and 309 games pitched in.

In 2015, Moylan has appeared in 27 games for the Gwinnett Braves and has a 3.14 ERA.  In 28.2 innings pitched, he has 24 strikeouts, 22 hits given up, nine walks and 10 runs.

The Braves sent Jake Brigham down to Gwinnett after a horrific Saturday night on the mound.  Against Arizona he gave up two runs on one hit, one walk and one hit batter….without getting an out.

Before Saturday night’s game, Brigham had been pitching well as he went five straight appearances without giving up a run.  The 27-year-old was seeing his first stint in the majors as he spent nine seasons in the minor leagues.

Moylan has not pitched in a major league back since September 18, 2013 with the LA Dodgers.  He probably won’t be with the Braves long before making an appearance on the mound.

Not many Braves players were on the roster when Moylan was with the team back in 2012, but we still have a few – Freddie Freeman, Andrelton Simmons, Julio Teheran and newly acquired Michael Bourn.

I was able to watch Moylan pitch last week while the Gwinnett Braves were playing the Charlotte Knights.  Here is video that I shot of Moylan warming up in the bullpen.  A huge storm rolled in right as he was going into the game and I wasn’t able to get more video.
