Was 11 runs and 16 hits enough for the Atlanta Braves to win??

Nope

The Braves offense showed up in Miami ready to put some runs on the board.  In the top of the 1st inning, Atlanta totaled four runs off five hits against one of the best young pitchers in the game…Jose Fernandez.  Nick Markakis led off the game with a line drive homer to right center field on the third pitch of the game.

“When you score four runs in the 1st inning off Fernandez, you feel pretty darn good,” Braves Manager Fredi Gonzalez said after the game.  He doesn’t give up four runs in three starts.  If you pitch, you have a chance to win a ball game, but our starter didn’t get deep in the ball game.”

Gonzalez is referring to starting pitcher Ryan Weber.  The 25-year-old was pitching in his fourth career start and had been pitching well until Friday evening.  Weber went only two innings giving up nine hits, seven runs and a walk.  He pitched into the 3rd inning, but wasn’t able to get an out.

“He had no sink in his ball, everything was up.  There was no crisp, no sharpness…it was just one of those days for him,” Gonzalez said about his young pitcher.

After scoring four runs in the top of the 1st inning, the Braves allowed four Marlins runs in the bottom of the 1st and then three more runs in the top of the 3rd inning.

The score heading into the 5th was 11-4

Game is now 11-6

BUT, Marlins score in the bottom of the inning off Andrew McKirahan.

Miami up 12-6

In the top of the 7th inning, Freeman blasted a two-run homer to right center field which scored Daniel Castro.

Braves are closing the lead…12-8

Braves score three more runs in the top of the 8th inning when Adonis Garcia doubled in Hector Olivera and Michael Bourn.  Nick Swisher later walked with the bases loaded and scored Garcia.

This contest which no one wanted to win is now 12-11

After not allowing Miami to touch the plate in the bottom of the 8th inning, the Braves had a shot to win in the 9th.  Olivera led off the inning with a single, but Bourn grounded into a double play.  Ryan Lavarnway then struck out to end the game.

“It was definitely an interesting game tonight,” Freeman said after the game.  “There is no negatives in this game…when you get down 11-4 and come all the way back…we never quit, we even had an opportunity to win this game.  It was definitely interesting but fun game to play for the hitters (laughs).”
