Atlanta Braves Right Hander Tyrell Jenkins

Who Is He?

Jenkins was a high school draft pick in the compensatory 1st round in 2010 by the St. Louis Cardinals out of Henderson High School in Texas. The Cardinals sent the new draftee to their Appalachian League team in Johnson City where he made two appearances, throwing 3 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 2.

The Cardinals returned Jenkins to Johnson City for 2011, and he made 11 starts, throwing 56 innings with a 3.86 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, and 13/55 K/BB. While he gave up quite a few hits, his control and strikeout ability were definitely noticed by scouts, and he made the only Baseball America top-100 list of his career that offseason at #94.

Still just 19, Jenkins spent his 2012 in full-season ball with low-A Quad Cities in the Midwest League for the Cardinals. He flashed much of the same as his performance in 2011, but the results were drastically different, as he posted a 5.14 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, and a 36/80 BB/K ratio in 82 1/3 innings over 19 starts. In spite of those numbers, Jenkins made his only appearance on a Baseball Prospectus top prospects list that offseason, appearing at #94.

Jenkins returned to the Midwest League in 2013 at the Cardinals new affiliate in Peoria and had just earned a bump up to high-A Palm Beach of the Florida State League when he went down with surgery, not on his elbow, but on his shoulder. Combined between the two levels, Jenkins posted a 4.70 ERA over 13 starts and 59 1/3 innings with a 1.50 WHIP and 25/40 BB/K ratio.

He returned to Palm Beach after his surgery recovery and really pitched well in 2014, posting a 3.28 ERA in 13 starts and 74 innings with a 1.31 WHIP and 23/41 BB/K. The Cardinals sent him to the Arizona Fall League, and he put up very solid numbers, making 6 starts and throwing 24 1/3 innings, posting a 2.22 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, and 10/18 BB/K ratio. In the offseason, he was part of the Jason Heyward trade, bringing him to the Braves organization.
