Kendrick rocked by former team as Phils rout Braves 9-2

Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: Atlanta Braves starting pitcher and non-roster invitee, Kyle Kendrick has now started two games this Spring Training and hasn’t impressed in either.  This time was against a team that’s actually worse than the Braves and his former team.  In 3.2 innings pitched so far, he’s allowed 14 hits, nine runs, three walks and only picked up one strikeout.  One of my picks prior to the start of the season to be in the rotation, isn’t looking good as of now.

Atlanta’s Kyle Kendrick was rocked by his former team, giving up seven runs in less than two innings, and a Braves split-squad lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 9-2 on Friday.

Ryan Howard, playing for the first time in a week after getting over an illness, had a two-run double in the first off Kendrick, whose bid to win a spot in the Braves’ rotation took another major blow. His ERA in two spring appearances climbed to 22.09.

”I just had too many pitches up in the zone,” Kendrick said. ”Maybe I’m putting too much pressure on myself. I need to relax and make pitches.”

Dian Toscano gets a start in Braves outfield

Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: A Dian Toscano sighting!! He was a late fill in for Tyler Flowers for the Braves game on Friday afternoon.  He went 1-4 at the plate in his first Spring Training game.  Toscano is scheduled to go to Triple-A affiliate the Gwinnett Braves to start the 2016 season.  The Braves and Toscano agreed to a four-year, $7.5 million deal back in December 2014.  He wasn’t allowed in the United States until April because of paperwork issues/visas.  As he works towards Atlanta and showing everyone he was worth a 4-year major league deal, we’ll be watching.

A late scratch before Friday’s split-squad game against the Phillies resulted in Dian Toscano getting a start for the Braves in right field. Brought over from minor-league camp as an extra for the game, he ended up starting.

He went 1-for-4 with a first-inning RBI single and two strikeouts in the Braves’ 9-2 loss.

Toscano, who turned 27 on Wednesday, is the Cuban defector who signed a four-year, $6 million free-agent contract with the Braves in December 2014. He had to sit out the entire 2015 season because of governmental red tape before finally being cleared in November to begin playing.

Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: Matt Wisler worked with Hall of Fame pitcher and Atlanta Braves great Tom Glavine this offseason as he prepares for the 2016 season.  The two worked on Wisler’s changeup and reports are that they found something impressive.  680 the Fan’s Kevin McAlpin sat down and spoke with Wisler at the Wide World of Sports Complex

Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note:  Jace Peterson and Ozzie Albies both made tremendous plays on Friday afternoon against the Cardinals.  Jace was playing third base and made a play to his right.  The great glove work led to a great throw (yes he one-hopped it, but it’s tough to get enough behind a throw in that position).  Ozzie made an amazing play to his right as he laid fully out for a blooper.  This could be a top play of Spring Training 2016.
