Hector Olivera Arrested, Put On Administrative Leave

News broke this morning about Atlanta Braves outfielder/infielder Hector Olivera being arrested from his Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Pentagon City Virginia because of a woman saying she had been assaulted.  Check out Alan’s write up this morning for more information about the arrest.

An ABC affiliate in Washington, D.C., WJLA, reported a call came into the police at 6:51am this morning from the Ritz Hotel and a little later, Olivera was arrested.  WJLA is also reporting that Olivera did have a previous relationship with this woman.

Olivera has been placed on administrative leave as the MLB office has began an investigation.  Olivera will be paid while on administrative leave, but his pay will be docked if suspended as result of this investigation.

The Braves have issued a statement regarding his arrest…

If you didn’t see at the end of this statement, Braves will call-up infielder Daniel Castro.  The 23-year-old Castro is probably a name you recognize as he appeared in 33 games for the 2015 Braves.  He had 100 plate appearances batting .240/.263/.344 with two home runs, two doubles, a triple, 14 runs scored and five RBIs.

Don’t expect this call-up to be a huge part moving forward.  The Braves have multiple infielders to cover these positions so Castro probably won’t get much playing time.  Castro was the only position player on the 40-man roster not on the Braves 25-man roster.

For the short-term, the Braves will now turn to Kelly Johnson, Drew Stubbs and Jeff Francoeur for the left field position.

This story is obviously still developing, but you never want this kind of news coming from your clubhouse.  Olivera still has yet to be formally charged for this, but is meeting with a Virginia judge some time this afternoon.

Braves take on the Nationals at 7:05pm ET tonight.  Matt Wisler will take the mound against the National’s Stephen Strasburg.  It will be interesting to see how the Braves come out of the gate after this developing news story that’s obviously larger than the game of baseball.
