Braves Call Up Foltynewicz To Atlanta
The rumor out of Braves camp is that Mike Foltynewicz has been called upon to start for the Atlanta Braves on Monday night in New York against the Mets. If all goes right, he will be squared up against Mets’ starting pitcher Bartolo Colon.
Tommy Stoke of Today’s Knuckleball is reporting that Foltynewicz will be inserted into the Braves rotation starting early next week if no rain outs.
Here is what they are saying…
"Sources tell Today’s Knuckleball that Foltynewicz will be called up to take the vacant spot in the starting rotation after Bud Norris was moved to the bullpen on Friday. Weather permitting, Foltynewicz will make his 2016 debut with the Braves on Monday in New York against the Mets. However, if weather cancels Saturday’s game against the Cubs and no double-header is scheduled, the plan to start on Monday can change."
On Friday, wind was blowing that it could be Folty or prospect Tyrell Jenkins. Both have pitched very well for the Gwinnett Braves and both are on the verge of a trip to Atlanta.
The 2016 stats for these two young pitchers are pretty comparable…
In four starts for the Gwinnett Braves, Foltynewicz has a 2.05 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 22 innings. In four starts for the Gwinnett Braves, Jenkins has a 1.71 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 21 innings.
Earlier today, Fred Owens gave us a breakdown of the Braves rotation/news.
Though nothing is official just yet, Folty to Atlanta has been widely speculated over the past week. The 24-year-old started 15 games for the Braves in 2015 and is working his way back from a September surgery to repair a blockage near his rib that was affecting his pitching arm.
Whether it’s Folty or Jenkins, I think we’ll all be pretty excited about Norris not in the Braves rotation any longer.
