First game with the Diamondbacks continues to show that there is no home cooking for the home-standing Braves

Officially, the score tally records two errors on the Atlanta Braves’ defense.  Unofficially, there are several more.  Errant plays all around the diamond allowed more runners to reach, extended innings, and allowed enemies to score.

In the end, a solid outing for Aaron Blair in his home debut ended up looking anything but in a 7-2 loss.

Blair was not as sharp tonight as he has been, earning just 1 strikeout against 4 walks in 5 innings.  Yet he indeed deserved a better fate.  Ultimately, the charge is for 2 earned runs and 3 total, though we could certainly argue that he could have gotten off with nothing allowed, save for pickoff plays not turned, scoops not made, throws home that were wild, throws home that weren’t caught… and so on.  Hardly anyone on the field seemed immune from this disease.

The Braves’ offense did get 10 hits and managed to push across 2 runs against AZ starter Zack Greinke in 6 innings.  However, he looked better than he really was.  So many times did Atlanta hitters chase balls in the dirt or well outside… and the 8 strikeouts tell that tale.

The best Braves’ threats came in the 6th and 8th innings.  In both cases, tying runs reached the plate, but the ‘big hit’ never materialized.

8. Final. 2. 17. 7

Notes:

  • Freeman, Aybar, and Markakis all collected 2 hits on the night.
  • A.J. Pierzynski‘s frustrations continue:  0-2 with a disputed strikeout that got him tossed from the game when interim manager Fredi Gonzalez failed to get to umpire Cory Blaser quickly enough to stop the hook.  Pierzynski is now hitting .215.
  • Shoutout to Hunter Cervenka:  this guy is on fire.  two batters, got both out – again.  ERA still zero.  He’s doing the LOOGY job better than Eric O’Flaherty.

Next: When will he get here? Acuna or later.

That’s really all for tonight:  summary is that Arizona parlayed extra outs into runs… and a Win.  Games 2 and 3 over the weekend… Shelby Miller is up next for the D-Backs against Julio Teheran and the tribe.
