Braves Shortstop Taken To Hospital, Sedated

Atlanta Braves shortstop Erick Aybar has been taking to a nearby Pittsburg hospital.  The reasoning behind this trip is to have a chicken bone removed from his throat.  Information is still trickling in, but this happened today during lunch.

Yes, you read that correctly and according to both AJC’s David O’Brien and Braves beat writer Mark Bowman, this is not a hoax.

This 2016 just continues to get stranger and stranger for the Atlanta Braves.

Aybar was originally in the starting lineup for the Braves on Thursday night against Pittsburg, but Daniel Castro has replaced him.

The 32-year-old has started the season putting up career worst numbers at the plate.  This has caused Braves fans to voice their displeasure all over the web.  He is currently hitting .174 with only four extra bag hits.  In the 36 games played at shortstop this season, he’s only recorded three errors, but hasn’t impressed anyone there either.

Because this story is extremely new and rarely (possibly never) ever happens, it’s not known yet if Aybar will need to be placed on the disabled list.  In any case, Aybar may need the time to regroup his mind on and off the baseball diamond.

All joking aside, this could have been a very serious situation and a pat on the back for the folks who rushed him to the hospital.

The Braves are playing the Pirates in the final game of their four-game series tonight (Thursday) and then they will travel to Philadelphia to take on the Phillies in a weekend series matchup.

**UPDATED**

The bone that was caught in Aybar’s throat earlier this afternoon dislodged itself while at the hospital, but before the doctor went in his throat.  He had arrived at the field, but obviously is unavailable for tonight’s game.  A serious situation sounds like a serious problem was avoided.
