Even a Career High Strikeout Night for Julio Teheran isn’t enough…once again the Braves fail to get the key hit

12 strikeouts.  5 hits.

Those numbers placed beside one another are the main things you need to know about the game last night.  Sure:  one pitch got away from Teheran – the one that Ryan Braun deposited beyond the wall.  Sure:  Bud Norris walked a batter who ended up being the winning run.

But do the pitchers really have to be that perfect?

Apparently so, given this offense.

The game was on the basepaths for the Braves, and yet they couldn’t cash it in.  Jeff covered much of this in his recap from last night, but I wanted to highlight two things:

  • INNING 2:  Bases loaded.  Erick Aybar up (figures).  Double play lineout to 3B, unassisted.  Then Teheran grounds out to end the inning with no runs scored.
  • INNING 5:  After an infield single by Aybar, Teheran bunted perfectly to move him to second.  Mallex Smith then roped a triple to the RF corner, scoring Aybar.  Then even the speed of Smith could not overcome a strikeout, HBP, and flyout to LF.

Yes:  Freeman’s 3rd out was almost enough to leave the yard and break the game open.  But it didn’t, and Atlanta only got the single run.

17. 2. 76. Final. 1

So all of this effort by Teheran was wasted – leaving him with the same kind of situation that Shelby Miller found himself in a year ago.  Teheran’s ERA is now 2.57 and he’s got a 1-4 record.

The Braves have scored 3, 2, 2, 3, 0, 4, 2, 1, 3, and 1 runs behind Teheran, winning 2 out of his 10 starts over 63 innings.

That has started up the twitter-verse with a whole lotta speculation on trade bait… a subject I’ll hope to get to later today.
