The Big Hit happened for Atlanta on Monday while Foltynewicz out-pitched Jeff Samardzija en route to a 5-3 Braves victory

There were several excuses that San Francisco could have used in yesterday’s game:  they got to Atlanta in the early morning hours, then had to turn around for a 1:10pm EDT start; they also rested catcher Buster Posey.

Either way, it seemed to matter little as Mike Foltynewicz went six strong innings (probably should have been at least seven), giving up just 3 hits and 2 walks.

Folty was in such control, that there were two points of drama:

  • The humorous kind:  would Mallex Smith catch up to A.J. Pierzynski during his key bases-loaded triple? It turns out that Mallex was well aware of the runner in front of him and continued to look ahead to see if he needed to stop early.  Credit to A.J. for hustling – scoring all the way ’round from first base.
  • The thriller kind:  Arodys Vizcaino giving up 2 runs (1 earned via a tough error) in the 9th, then having a go-ahead run at the plate before finally rolling the credits on this movie.

Are we still thinking that Folty might be a ‘good bullpen piece’?
