Atlanta Braves DL EOF, Recall Ryan Weber; Simmons Setback
A Right Knee strain will sideline Braves reliever O’Flaherty for the next 2 weeks; Weber called up to stand in his stead. Also: Shae Simmons news.
A bit of health/transaction news for the Atlanta Braves this afternoon:
When Eric O’Flaherty did enter the game Saturday afternoon against the Cubs, things didn’t go particularly well (though that was a common theme in the bullpen this weekend): 3 runs scored in 2 innings, with 4 hits recorded… although he also K’d 3 with no walks.
This will be Weber’s third call-up of the season, the first two stints coming in late April and then early June. He’s managed nearly 10 innings so far with an 8.38 ERA – the result of 2 poor outings at the end of April.
At Gwinnett, he’s been excellent: 2.81 ERA in 32 innings with just 7 walks against 18 strikeouts.
Weber also fared much better in the majors when recalled earlier this month: no runs scoring, allowing 2 hits in 2 innings and striking out 1 batter of the 8 faced.
EOF has had a rough go at it here and there – often getting the really tough assignments and not just the ‘LOOGY’ role. Thus he sports a 6.52 ERA, though his line certainly has a lot more zeros on it than this would suggest.
Saturday marked his 27th appearance on the year, with 19.1 innings total.
Shae it isn’t So!
I put both of these tweets in here since they seem to convey different takes on the situation. It sounds like Shae Simmons has been struggling with some pain in the repaired elbow that isn’t going away.
But wait a second… there’s more details:
That’s … more concerning. Shoulders are tricky things.
So far Shae has only managed 5 competitive innings between Rome and Gwinnett… but hasn’t been scuffed up very much in the process. Of some concern: 5 walks in his 4 Gwinnett innings, but this rehab setback is a bigger concern, and likely will delay his return for a month of more.
We’ll wait and see what the doctors have to say.
