Atlanta Braves Win Behind Bats, Mike Foltynewicz and Tyrell Jenkins

Braves Hook Fish In 8-5 Victory
The Atlanta Braves took game one of this four game series with the Miami Marlins on Thursday night. On the final night of June 2016, the Braves beat the Marlins 8-5 after trailing 3-0 early. Atlanta finished the month of June with a 12-16 record.
In the top of the 2nd inning, Marcell Ozuna lead off the inning reaching on an error by Adonis Garcia. Giancarlo Stanton was up next and Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz walked him – one four straight pitched, two of which were probably strikes. With no outs and on a 3-2 pitch, Folty gave up a three-run home run to Justin Bour to give the Marlins the early lead.
Then the skies opened up. Mid-third inning, we had to stop by because of a storm that rolled through Turner Field.
Rain, Rain Go Away
After a 68 minute rain delay, the Braves came out firing!
Jace Peterson started the bottom of the 3rd inning off with a sharp single to center. Chase D’Arnaud grounded into a force out at 2nd, but next up with our man Freddie Freeman! He blasted a tripe, yep you read that correctly a triple! This scored Chase to make the game 3-1. This was Freeman’s fourth triple of the season. Later in the inning Nick Markakis singled to score Freeman. Marlins lead 3-2.
Because of the rain delay, Folty didn’t counting in the game. He threw 61 pitches, 41 that were strikes in his three innings pitched. This was his first game back from DL.
“It was a shame we lost Folty, I really wanted him to get out there and get his pitches,” Manager Brian Snitker said after the game. “He was throwing good, but he got out of whack in the 2nd inning. I would have liked to see him stretched out some more.”
Tyrell Jenkins came into the game to pitch the 4th inning for the Braves. He just came in and did everything you could imagine. He lasted 2.1 inning, gave up two hits, zero runs, three walks and two strikeouts.
Here Comes The Offense!
Jeff Francoeur got things going in the 6th inning when he was walked by Wei-Yin Chen who continued to pitch after the rain delay. Tyler Flowers then doubled and we’ve got runners on second and third.

Marlins made a pitching change after the Flowers double. One lefty, Chen, to another, Mike Dunn. Erick Aybar singled off Dunn to score Frenchy. Then pinch-hitter Brandon Snyder drove a line drive triple to center field off the wall. This triple scored Flowers and Aybar! Later in the inning, D’Arnaud singled to left to score Snyder. Braves lead 6-3 leaving the 6th!
Braves tack on another run in the 7th inning when Tyler Flowers hits another double and another in the 8th inning when D’Arnaud hit a ground-rule double to left-center field.
One negative that came in this game was in the top of the 9th inning. Arodys Vizcaino came into the game and got two very quick outs. But then he walks Bour and J.T. Realmuto
The Strange 9th Inning
With just one out to go, Vizzy threw a pitch on the outside corner that looked very close to a strike. Flowers got extremely upset that home plate umpire Larry Vanover called the pitch a ball and voiced his opinion. Arguing balls and strikes doesn’t go over to well with umpires and Flowers was quickly tossed.
“For Tyler (Flowers) to react like that, I’ve got to believe him,” Snit said. “He’s as professional as they come and if you get that reaction out of him and I think you’ve got a pretty good reason for it. Tyler was so upset that I’d have to feel that ball was what Tyler thought it was.”
We’ve seen this emotion from our guys quite a bit lately and it’s something I don’t mind seeing. These guys want to win and aren’t afraid to wear their emotions on their shelves.
“It means something to us,” Snyder said after the game. “The season hasn’t necessary gone our way, but every pitch, every out it means something to every player. Right there with Flo (Flower) it meant something to him and to stick up for Vizcaino I think is huge. We said it for the last couple weeks, we’re not going to give up. We’re going to go out with our emotions and play and stick up for one another.”
What do you think? Was this pitch a ball or a strike? Well, there were multiple calls Vanover could have called strikes for the Braves throughout the night and this one was lit a fuse in Flowers.
“It was a little too eventfully for me,” Snitker said after the game. “It was a well played game and our guys came back from being down again.”
The Marlins were able to get another run in the 9th (Vizzy’s run), but the Braves still won the ball game 8-5. I should mention Mauricio Cabrera came in to replace Vizzy and was throwing gas once again. He was able to get the final out and hit 102mph a couple times during this at-bat.
Back at it tomorrow night at 7:35pm ET at Turner Field
