Atlanta Braves Bullpen Changes Again

Mark Bowman reports that the Atlanta Braves placed RHP Chris Withrow on the DL and added Chaz Roe to the bullpen.

The Braves acquired Withrow from the Los Angeles Dodgers along with Juan Uribe in exchange for Alberto Callaspo, Juan Jaime, Eric Stults and Ian Thomas. He had undergone TJ surgery on June 3, 2014 and continued his rehab over the winter.

More from Tomahawk Take

He began this season at Gwinnett and made one appearance before being called on April 10. He made 10 appearance with Atlanta throwing seven innings before returning to Gwinnett.

He made eight appearance there without allowing a run while striking out 10 and walking 4 before being recalled by the Braves  on May 25.

Since returning to Atlanta he’s been a staple in the Braves bullpen throwing 25 1/3 innings over 30 games with a 3.16 ERA and 1.130 WHIP striking out 21 and walking nine. Opposing hitter posted a .215/.282/.344/.626 line with a BAbip of .232.

According to the report linked above Withrow’s stint on the DL is designed to rest “an inflamed right elbow” even though his velocity had  “remained relatively normal recently.”

Withrow’s move to the DL allows the addition of Chaz Roe to the bullpen. As I wrote yesterday, the Braves claimed Roe off waivers after the Orioles designated him for assignment.

That’s A Wrap

The Braves pitching staff seems to be a never-ending line of new faces and reclaimed veterans. I wonder if they all wear name tags so Roger McDowell can remember who’s who? It’s also interesting to look at recent dealings with LA.

Withrow is the only member of that trade with the Dodgers.  LA released Stults before he could pack and travel to the west coast, cut ties with Callaspo in August last season and released Jaime in November.

Dodger President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman and GM Farhan Zaidi believed Ian Thomas could be converted to a starter but that experiment failed and they released him in July.  Earlier this month the Indians DFA’d an underperforming Uribe leaving  Withrow the last man standing,

In the other trade with LA last year we sent them Luis Avilan Bronson Arroyo, Jim Johnson, Jose Peraza and Alex WoodJim Johnson after was awful in the Dodger Bullpen and they used him mostly in mop up and low leverage situation then released him in October. Arroyo never pitched for LA and they released him in November.

Next: Adonis 2017?

Peraza  appeared in seven games in 2015 posting a .182/.250/.318/.568 line and was traded to the Reds in December. Wood made 12 starts in 2015 posting a 4.35 ERA, 1.265 WHIP in 70 1/3 inning and followed that with 10 starts this season posting a 3.99 ERA, 1.314 WHIP in 56 1/3 innings before going on the DL and having a second elbow surgery –  this time to clean up the joint and remove bone chips – that ended his season.

I wonder if they even answer with Coppy calls now?
