Atlanta Braves Add Wilfredo Boscan

MLB Trade Rumors reports that the Atlanta Braves claimed Wilfredo Boscan off release waivers from the Pirates.

Boscan signed with the Rangers in 2006 as am international free agent. The  6’2” 175 pound righty spent the next six seasons working his way through the Rangers system finishing 2012 at AA Frisco with a 4.12 ERA in 34 games including nine starts striking out 80 and walking 28.

In December the Rangers sent Boscan to the San Diego Padres as the PTBNL in an earlier trade.  He spent that season between AA and AA for the Friars  before moving on the Boston in 2014 where he worked mostly at AA.

The Pirates acquired him in 2015 and he spent most of the season at Indianapolis where he made 23 starts and a couple of relief appearances throwing 129 innings with a 3.79 ERA striking out 86 and walking 45.

In August the Pirates needed a roster spot and designated him for assignment. He initially refused assignment but signed back a few days later and finished the year at AAA.

Boscan elected free agency that October but signed back with the Pirates again in December. He made his major league debut May 19th against the Braves throwing two shutout innings in relief in the Pirates 8-2 win over Atlanta.

Before being designated for assignment last week he made six appearances for the Bucs throwing 15 1/3 innings and posting a 6.46 ERA, 1.435 WHIP, striking out eight and walking seven.

Other News – Good News Too

Brian Snitker told David O’Brien that Flowers could arrive about that time as well but wasn’t sure how they would handle Anthony Recker when Flowers returned.

"“Because Recker’s done a really good job. I don’t know if we make a move somewhere else for a temporary type thing. We could go with (less) pitching and not carry an extra bullpen guy. And probably just like everything else just see where we’re at at the time, how to approach it.”"

That’s A Wrap

Boscan was sent to Gwinnett where he won’t be the only newbie on the block. As Alan wrote earlier today the Braves signed lefty Brian Moran and that’s his likely landing spot as well, I’ve linked Moran’s page on the Baseball Cube if you want to scan his numbers.

Boscan can start and relieve and that flexibility could make him useful but primarily he looks like more grist for the mill, particularly with the news of Teheran and Vizcaino’s immanent return.   As expected the Braves will find a way to keep Recker when Flowers returns.

Next: Who is Brian Moran?

With all of this constant movement we still haven’t traded any of our ‘sure to be traded’ veterans but there’s still time though it remains to be seen if there’s interest elsewhere for them.
