Braves Rehabbing Starting Pitcher, Hit A Bump

The Atlanta Braves placed right-handed pitcher, John Gant on the 15-day disabled list on June 28 with a left oblique strain.  The 24-year-old has had a rollercoaster season with being a starting pitcher and being in the bullpen.  Trough all the triumphs and tribulations, it looks as though Gant is now healthy and ready to finish off the 2016 season.

Gant started for the Gwinnett Braves on Monday, but had an unforgettable night.

The leadoff batter of the game for the Charlotte Knights, Leury Garcia, hit a home run to left-center field.  The pitch from Gant was low, good pitch that Garcia was just able to put a good swing on it.

Charlotte’s next two hitters both put good swings on the pitches, but luckily right to Gwinnett’s players.

Then Knights first baseman, Jerry Sands blasted a solo homer way over the left field wall.  Gant left this pitch up and in and Sands took advantage of it.

A couple instances I saw while watching this game live is that the Knights continued to try to bunt their way on or to move the runner.  I’m not sure if they picked something up with Gant on the mound, or if they were taking advantage of Gwinnett’s catcher Blake Lalli or if they’ve been doing this all year.  The other thing was stealing bases.  Charlotte’s Jacob May stole third and Jake Peter stole another bag….also could be because Lalli.

The stats for Gant weren’t pretty on Monday evening, but there were positives.  He went five innings, gave up nine hits, six runs, two walks and had one strikeout.  This is Gant’s third rehab game with the Gwinnett Braves.

One other thing I noticed, the beard is back and is coming in strong!

The Braves need Gant to come back to Atlanta as our rotation is extremely slim right now.  With youngsters Aaron Blair and Matt Wisler dealing with confidence/control issues, we need others to get healthy again.  Julio Teheran is on his way back and should be in Atlanta by the end of this week.  He has his rehab start on Sunday with Gwinnett.

Gant will be fine, but the Braves will probably give him a few more rehab starts prior to being called back up to Atlanta.  On Monday he left a few pitches up in the strike zone that got hit hard, but health is the key here.  He needs to fine tune his mechanics and we’ll be seeing solid numbers from him once again.
