Braves Trade SS Aybar To Tigers

Well, John Coppolella has done it again.  Atlanta Braves General Manager has pulled off another sell high trade as it is official…Erick Aybar to the Detroit Tigers.

Atlanta has received veteran infielder and outfielder Mike Aviles and catching prospect Kade Scivicque.

The 23-year-old, Scivicque is definitely the prize in this trade as he was ranked #20 in the Tigers top prospects in 2016 by MLB.com.  My initial reaction to where he’d be placed on the Braves top prospect list I would say between 20-24 and ahead of any other catcher in the organization.

He will be assigned to the Carolina Mudcats.

Scivicque was drafted by the Tigers in the 4th round of the 2015 draft (130th overall) out of LSU.  He bats and throws right-handed and is currently listed as a 6’0″ 225 pound catcher.  He has been playing for the Lakeland Flying Tigers, their Single-A Advanced team.  He was a 1st team All-American in 2015 at LSU.

In 105 games this season, Scivicque has a .282 batting average, with 19 doubles, two triples, six home run and 41 RBIs.  He does have a high strikeout rate (83 k’s compared to 22 walks), but that’s normal for a college bat looking to move up in the minors.

Here is what MLB.com has on Scivicque….

"With a solid average arm, Scivicque threw out 50 percent of would-be basestealers during his pro debut and pitchers liked throwing to him in full-season ball. Offensively, he tries not to do too much and barrels up balls while not being afraid to go the other way. The bat might be a little light for him to be an everyday catcher in the future.A natural leader, Scivicque has the kind of confidence teams like to see from their backstops. He brings a bulldog mentality to the field on a daily basis. He might profile best as a backup at the highest level, but one a pitching staff loves to have on the roster."

JourneyMan Aviles Is Now A Brave

You probably recognize the name Mike Aviles.  The 35-year-old has played for four different organizations since 2008 — the Royals, Red Sox, Indians and Tigers.

More from Tomahawk Take

In his nine-year MLB career, he’s a .262 hitter with 59 homers, 78 stolen bases and he has the ability to play six different positions.  He’s the ultra-super utility man.

The Braves will most likely keep Aviles in Atlanta to have the opportunity to play him pretty much anywhere.  He’ll get added to the 40-man roster and the 25-man roster very shortly.

Aviles will be a free agent at the end of the 2016 season.

Nice To Know YaBar

It’s a sad, sad afternoon as the Braves have traded away fan favorite Erick Aybar.  Ha, I joke, I joke.

The 32-year-old didn’t make many friends with the fans during his tenure with the Braves as he started off the season struggled awfully at the plate.  He actually has played a lot better as of late on the defensive side and at the plate.  He got hot at the plate in June — hitting .302 — and has been even better so far in August — hitting .333.

Next: Braves Three Missed Trading Opportunities

His slow start to the season and his awful July gave him a low trade value before the 2016 trading deadline, but since he’s picked it up.

Coppy saw an opportunity to get rid of the veteran and he pulled the trigger.

My obvious reaction to this trade is cha-ching!  Nice job Coppy!!

The Other Move

Braves will call up top prospect, Dansby Swanson!

The shortstop will be in the lineup on Wednesday and wear the #2 jersey

Wow, huge news out of Braves camp on a slow Tuesday.
