What’s Everyone Talking About?

Uhh, I believe they’re all talking about this Dansby Swanson guy.  Atlanta Braves number one prospect is being called up to Atlanta for Wednesday’s game.  This will be the debut for the 22-year-old and MLB.com’s sixth ranked player.

Since the Braves official page tweeted out the news about Swanson, the flood gates opened.  You can’t go anywhere or do anything without seeing something about this story.  Not a bad thing though as we’re all just extremely excited about something!

“We’re pretty excited,” Freddie Freeman told reporters after Tuesday nights game.  “It’s what you’ve been hearing about since we got him in that trade.  We saw him in Spring Training and he impressed a lot of people so it starts now and we’re excited and welcome him.”

The Braves trade Erick Aybar to the Detroit Tigers for infielder/outfielder Mike Aviles and catching prospect Kade Scivicque right before the game on Tuesday.

“I wish Erick well, he’s played well here lately,” Braves Manager Brian Snitker said after the game.  “He’ll be a good addition for the Detroit Tigers and their quest.  It will be a great opportunity for Dansby.”

Yes, yes it will.  The debut for Dansby is now on the clock.  The Braves said he’s not being promoted to be on the bench and he will be in the lineup on Wednesday.  Swanson will wear the #2 jersey for the Braves.

“I don’t know if he’s going to be in the lineup or not, but I remember my first day I was just trying not to throw up,” Freeman speaking about Swanson’s call up.  “He’s going to be nervous, he’s going to be excited.  You’re going to have a lot of different emotions, you just have to take it all in.  You’re never going to have a major league debut again so it’s going to be an excited time for him.  No matter what happens in the game, it’s a day he’ll never forget.”

Swanson hasn’t played above the Double-A level, but that seems to be the common move as of late.  For the Mississippi Braves in 2016, Swanson is hitting .261/.342/.402 with eight home runs, five triples, 13 doubles and six stolen bases.

“He’s been doing okay,” Snitker said of Swanson’s stats in 2016.  “He’s not setting the world on fire, I don’t think he’s, but I think everyone remembers what we saw in Spring Training.  We’re not asking this kid to come in and carry us to the promise land.  We’re asking him to come in and be a part of this team.  He’s a good player, I think we all saw that in the spring and it’s time to get a look at him.  We don’t want him to come in here and think he’s got to lead the league in hitting the rest of the way and be our savor because that’s not what we’re asking from him.”

The Braves are going to give Swanson his audition to see if he’s ready for the MLB level.  This is coming a little early as we all thought it would be a September call up, but we might as well bring him up and see what he can do!

“I think it will be invaluable,” Snitker about Swanson’s call up.  “For him to be in major league baseball, to see the competition here, the speed of the game, and everything involved.  Being around the guys, the league, the whole thing is going to be invaluable for him.”
