Atlanta Braves News: The Morning Chop, Box Score, Dansby’s Debut, Chipper’s Words
By Jeff Schafer
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: The Atlanta Braves bullpen struggled in the late innings on Wednesday night. In the 6th inning, Eric O’Flaherty gave up one run and in the 7th inning he gave a leadoff single and a walk which later scored when Ian Krol tried to relive EOF. Let’s recap Krol’s night real quick — a wild pitch, intentional walk, single which scored a run, groundout that scored a run, single that scored a run and then a strikeout. Prospect Jason Hursh came into the game in the in the 9th inning and put on a show — not a good one. He was able to get one out, while giving up one hit, three walks and allowed four earned runs to cross the plate. What folks are forgetting with the bullpen failures and the Dansby Swanson debut, is that Mike Foltynewicz pitched a pretty good game. Striking out seven batters, giving up five hits, two runs and three walks. Not great, but not bad.

Battleship,’ Son of Baconator and some tears as Braves’ Dansby Swanson makes MLB debut
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: This article that was published by FOX Sports Cory McCartney couldn’t be more accurate. The first few paragraphs that he writes is all about Braves Country needing to take a deep breath about the debut of Dansby Swanson. Yes, everyone is extremely excited about this 22-year-old shortstop, but let’s take the 500 tons of bricks off his shoulders. Swanson had a pretty solid night for his debut. He went 2-4 at the plate and had a perfect game at shortstop…well, that’s probably because zero balls went to him (very oddly). Anyway, I’m pretty sure he played his way into the lineup for tonight’s game against the Washington Nationals.
"The right hander came up to bat for the first time in the second inning at Turner Field to a loud ovation before a hard-hit line-out to center off Minnesota’s Kyle Gibson. Two innings later, he delivered his first hit, a one-out single on a sharply hit ball to right field, then in the ninth he sent a line drive up the middle, giving him a two-hit debut in the Braves’ 10-3 loss.“About as much as a dream come true as possible,” Swanson said of the feelings of taking the field for the first time, “playing for your home town team, basically going out there and going out there and doing what you’ve worked your whole life for.”“External (pressures) aren’t the ones that matter,” he said. “It’s the internal ones and the ones you set for yourself and basically having comfort and confidence in that help me get through that personally.”"
Braves trade for Mike Aviles – then DFA him a day later
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: The Braves DFA’d Mike Aviles a day after he was traded to Atlanta from Detroit. The 35-year-old was hitting .210 in the 68 games he played in 2016 and really hasn’t hit well in the last few years. Instead of giving him a shot, the Braves just went ahead and let him go. Yeah, I think I’d rather have Swanson at short. So let’s recap this trade….we trade Aybar, get a top 20 catching prospect and then we get our #1 prospect to the bigs — woah, pretty awesome move by John Coppolella.
"Mike Aviles was designated for assignment by the Atlanta Braves, less than a day after the Detroit Tigers traded the utility player. The Tigers acquired infielder Erick Aybar from the Braves on Tuesday night for Aviles and minor-league catcher Kade Scivicque.Moving Aybar allowed the Braves to bring up 22-year-old shortstop prospect Dansby Swanson, the first overall pick in the 2015 MLB draft. The Diamondbacks made Swanson the top overall pick, then traded him last December to the Braves as part of a package for Shelby Miller."
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: Even Braves great, Chipper Jones came to the Dansby party last night. I’d like to see the ratings from last nights game because I’m sure they were the highest TV ratings the Braves have seen all season. Tune in again tonight as the Braves face the Nationals and Reynaldo Lopez. Rob Whalen is on the mound for the Braves.
