A few things have hit the wire this afternoon that Braves’ fans will want to know about.

More from Tomahawk Take

  • Arodys Vizcaino has been activated from the disabled list and will be back in uniform today.  Jim Johnson will remain as closer – at least for the time being.  In fact, the plan seems to be to have Mauricio Cabrera to remain as the 8th inning guy for now (source:  Dave O’Brien).
  • For every transaction, there is an equal and opposite transaction:  Jason Hursh has thus been optioned to Gwinnett.  He’s had a very rough go in his first 2 major league outings:  1.1 innings and 5 earned runs for an ugly 33.75 ERA, facing 11 batters and getting just 4 of them out.  He’s better than this, but will need to rebuild confidence in his mid-90’s ‘stuff’.
  • Andrew Thurman has been released.  We thought he might be ‘sleeper’ pick-up in the Evan Gattis trade, and early on he showed promise.  However, once he was promoted to the Southern League (and truly, he started well there, as I witnessed his first outing for Mississippi against Mobile), he lost his groove… and his control. In 2015, Thurman walked 1.73 batters per 9 innings at Carolina, but once demoted back to that team this year, it was 6.66 BB/9… with an ERA above 9.00.  (source:  Carolina Mudcats)
  • His departure makes space for Chad Sobotka, returning from the Mudcats DL. The very tall (6’7″) right-hander sports a 2.45 ERA in almost 15 innings at Carolina – besting a 4.26 in 19 innings earlier at Rome.  He was a 4th round pick by the Braves in 2014.
  • It isn’t official yet, but signs point to the return of Julio Teheran to start the Friday night game against the Nationals.
  • ICYMI:  Tyler Flowers was activated yesterday while A.J. Pierzynski was placed on the DL for a hamstring injury.  I’m pretty certain that A.J. will be ready to go again on September 1st without the need for a rehab start.
  • Oh, and some guy named Swanson (you might have heard of him) had his contract purchased from the Mississippi Braves… technically taking the place of Mike Aviles, who probably never even boarded a plane for Atlanta after the Erick Aybar trade.

A four game set against the Nationals starts tonight.
