Braves Make Roster Moves Wednesday Afternoon

The Atlanta Braves made a few roster moves on Wednesday as they sent Rob Whalen to the disabled list and will call up Matt Wisler from Gwinnett.  Also, another move that could be on the horizon is the call up of starting pitcher Aaron Blair.

Whalen was placed on the DL this afternoon with “shoulder fatigue”.  The 22-year-old is actually being placed on the DL because he had an innings limit.  In 2016, between Double-A, Triple-A and the majors he threw 144.2 innings.  His previous high was 96.2 innings last year with High-A.  Braves see something in this kid so they don’t want any arm issues to occur with throwing more than he’s ever thrown.

“More or less, he’s pitched more than he ever has,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said.  “It’s what it amounts to.”

In five starts with the Braves, Whalen was 1-2 with a 6.57 ERA.  He struck out 25 batters and walked 12 in 24.2 innings pitched.

“It stinks I don’t get to pitch, but nothing’s going to bring down what I was able to do this year,” Whalen said prior to Wednesday night’s game.  “I’m very proud of it.”

Wisler Gets The Call

The Braves gave Matt Wisler a phone call this afternoon (possibly yesterday) to lace back up the shoes and throw back on the Braves jersey.  He will get the ball tomorrow against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

More from Tomahawk Take

In 2016, Wisler began the season in Atlanta and started 21 games.  After struggling for about two months, the Braves sent him down to Gwinnett.

The 23-year-old started four games for Gwinnett and posted a 3.71 ERA with 22 strikeouts and only five walks.  Though he didn’t allow free bases, he did allow three runs in three of his starts and two runs in the other start.  In those four games, he allowed 27 hits in 26.2 innings pitched.

One thing that could we could see is Wisler realized he’s not guaranteed a starting spot in the Braves rotation.  It’s possible he regained some confidence in Triple-A and is ready to go again in Atlanta.  In 2015, his Triple-A stats weren’t great either and then impressed in Atlanta.

Frenchy Gets Traded 🙁

Sad, sad news.  The Braves have traded Jeff Francoeur to the Miami Marlins.  In a three way trade with the Rangers, the Braves have received minor league shortstop Dylan Moore from Rangers.  The Rangers will receive international signing bonus money.

Maybe the Braves will bring Frenchy back in the offseason.

Who is Dylan Moore?  No it’s not the actress from Blue Bloods.

He’s a 24-year-old from Newport Beach, California that was drafted in the 7th round of the 2015 draft.  He went to Central Florida.

In 2015, he played Single-A ball and had a slash line of .271/.376/.454 with seven home runs, one triple, and 21 doubles.  In 240 at-bats, he struck out 65 times and walked 32 times.

Next: 18 Numbers to Go: Who Pulls Down the Rest?

In 2016, he had a slash line of .263/.377/.440 with 14 home runs, three triples and 25 doubles.  Interesting power he contains.

In the 2014 Perfect Game, he was listed as a right-handed pitcher.

Baseball Draft Report had this to say about Moore — “Moore doesn’t have that one carrying tool that knocks you out at first sight, but he’s arguably average or better across the board with a patient approach and good athleticism. For a guy that can hang in the middle infield, what’s not to like about that? I like him so much that I can’t help but wonder what I’m seeing here that nobody else seems to notice.”

According the MLB.com, he is not in the Rangers top 30 prospects in 2016.

The Braves also receive catcher Matt Foley from the Marlins.  Let the Chris Farley jokes begins.

So to recap: The Marlins send Matt Foley to the Braves and International Bonus Pool Slot Numbers 37 and 97 to the Rangers.

The Braves send Francoeur and cash considerations to the Marlins and International Bonus Pool Slot Number 93 to the Rangers.

The Rangers send Dylan Moore to the Braves.
