Atlanta Braves DL Arodys Vizcaino Again

According to David O’Brien the Atlanta Braves put Arodys Vizcaino back on the DL today with inflammation in his pitching shoulder. This isn’t the first time Vizcaino’s been on the DL, it’s become a second home for him.

A History of Injury

It was just twelve days ago Vizcaino returned from his latest DL stint, that one for an oblique strain. When he returned he wasn’t sharp pitching 2 2/3  innings in four appearances with a 3.745 WHIP and opponents hitting .429/.579/.571 with everyone wondering what was wrong.

After his last outing – a scoreless inning against the Diamondbacks – he told the Braves he didn’t feel right.

"“The next day he wasn’t feeling too good,” Braves interim manager Brian Snitker said. “After he lets it calm down, throws a side and all that, hopefully get him back out there and let him finish the year good.”"

Actually he really hadn’t been good since for a while.

In his last 10 games (since June 26) he threw 6 1/3 innings giving up 16 runs – 12 earned – on 12 hits striking out six and walking eleven.  That comes out to a 17.05 ERA and a 3.633 WHIP. July was nearly as bad as August as he made three appearances but only lasted two innings with a 3.000 WHIP and opponents hitting .375/.545/.750.

Maybe he was hurting that far back, we have no way of knowing that unless he says so.  This shoulder issue however is just the latest in a long line of injury issues for the right hander.

That’s A Wrap

There are 30 games remaining after tonight and only 16 remaining when Vizzy is eligible to return. The Braves pen will continue to have its ups and downs but Chris Withrow should be close to returning and we will see more relievers slide up in a couple of days when the rosters expand.

Next: What's the Catch...er

Shoulders are awkward injuries to judge so the Braves may want him to take more time to rest it. On the other hand if trading him this winter is on their mind – as it should be IMO – they could want him to come back and prove he’s healthy. In any event he isn’t likely to get many more innings this year.

Whatever happens we’ll keep you up to date here at the Take,
