Braves Pick Up 49th Victory!

The Atlanta Braves score more runs than the San Diego Padres and you know what that means…we win!  Braves improve to 49-83 for the 2016 season.  More importantly than the team winning, the Braves starting pitcher Julio Teheran picked up a win!  This was his first victory at Turner Field since October 2, 2015 against the St. Louis Cardinals.

In fact, he hasn’t won a major league game since June 19th.

Teheran lasted seven innings, gave up six hits, two runs, no walks and had eight strikeouts.  His only inning that Julio struggled in on Tuesday night was the 4th inning.  He gave up a leadoff triple to Yangervis Solarte and then after getting two outs, Oswaldo Arcia hit a ball over the right field fence.

The 25-year-old is now 4-9 for the season with a 3.12 ERA.  He’ll most likely get five more starts for the 2016 season.

“He’s unbelievable, he’s fun to play behind,” Swanson said about Teheran.

It was one of the best games I’ve seen Teheran throw in a long time.  It looked as though he had confidence with his pitches and he had some extra heat on his fastball.

“It’s nice to score some runs for him,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said after the game about Teheran.  “His velocity is creeping back up and he had an encouraging night.”

Cool fact from Kevin McAlpin — “Julio Teheran improves to 22-0 for his career when given five or more runs of support.”

Another cool fact, it’s his first win since having a baby.  Teheran had a baby boy two-weeks ago to the day.

That O Was Great!

The 3rd inning is where we begin here and it all starts with the guy we’ve been talking about…Julio Teheran.  He doubles on a sharp line drive between the center fielder and right fielder.  This must have woke the bats up because the Braves then had three straight singles.  Ender Inciarte, Adonis Garcia and Freddie Freeman all singled off Padres starter Travis Jankowski.  Teheran scored on the Garcia single and Inciarte scored on the Freeman single.  Braves lead 2-0.

Let’s not end there though…after Matt Kemp flied out and Nick Markakis walked, Tyler Flowers hit a sac fly to right and Garcia scored.  Next up, Jace Peterson.  He singled to center and Freeman scores.  This guy named Dansby Swanson was up after Peterson.  He singled to center that drove in Markakis.  Braves hit around and take a 5-0 lead!

“I’m learning from a lot of these guys, we have a lot of veterans on this team,” Swanson said following the game.  “Just everyday learning something new and just have to apply it.”

We skip to the 5th inning for a few more runs.  With two-outs, Flowers walks and Peterson singled to center.  Dansby then doubled to left that scored both Flowers and Peterson.  Braves lead 7-2.

BB’s – Braves Bullpen

The bullpen was able to have a short night tonight after an off-day since Teheran lasted deep into the game.  Jose Ramirez came into the game in the 8th inning and what an inning he had.  Three very quick outs, three straight strikeouts and only threw two balls.  His fastball reached 97mph and his changeup was nasty.

The 26-year-old has now appeared in 18 games for the Atlanta Braves in 2016 and has a 4.34 ERA.  In his past six outings, he’s given up only one run, four hits, one walk and has totaled 10 strikeouts.  In his past 16 games, he’s given up three runs, 12 hits, three runs, eight walks and has 20 strikeouts.  I think we’ve found something here.

Ian Krol pitched the 9th inning for the Braves.  He gave up a one-out triple to left field by Ryan Schimpf.  This was hit over Kemp’s head and he tried to make a play on it.  He almost caught it, but didn’t.  By the time Kemp could get the ball back into the infield, Schimpf was on third.  He later scored on a groundout from Arcia.  Probably shouldn’t have an earned run, but Krol does in the scorebook.

TT – Tomorrow Tuesday

Braves and Padres meet for game two of this series.  Matt Wisler will get the ball for the Braves and Paul Clemens for the Padres.  In 12 games in 2016, Clemens has a 2-3 record with a 5.06 ERA and a .275 opponent batting average.  Wisler is looking to stay on track after his magnificent performance against the Diamondbacks last week.
