Braves Win, Freddie Losses Streak

Damn it feels good to see this team winning!  The Atlanta Braves took care of business, yes late, on Thursday night as they defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 5-2.  With this dubya, the Braves sweep he Phillies, ensure the season series win, and get one win away from ending the second half of the 2016 season with a .500 record.

The night wasn’t the best of nights for the Braves, but the bottom of the 8th inning was fantastic.

How Bout’ That 8th?

As the game was tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the 8th, the Braves brought the Golden Child to the plate first.  Dansby Swanson drew an eight-pitch leadoff walk to get things going.  After Freddie Freeman struck out, Matt Kemp roped a double down the right field line which scored Swanson.  This broke up the tie and the Braves just kept it going after that.

Next up, Nick Markakis was intentionally walked and Anthony Recker was hit by a pitch.  Jace Peterson hit a sharp grounder to right that scored another run.  Rio Ruiz then singled to right which scored Recker!  This put the Braves up 5-1

That was the young prospect’s first MLB RBI and everyone was excited…even a former third baseman…

Let’s rewind just a bit.  How about we look into the bottom of the 6th inning.  Braves were trailing 1-0 as we headed to the bottom.  Then Mr. Swanson strolled to the plate and basted a 3-1, 93 mph fastball over the center field wall.  This was his first home run in front of the home crowd!

Sad Note:

Braves Freddie Freeman went 0-4 on Thursday with two strikeouts, a ground out to first base and a fly out to center field.  This ended his 30-game hit streak and his 46-game on-base streak.  Both of these were MLB’s longest in 2016.

During Freddie’s 30-game hit streak, he had a slash line of .384/.485/.670 with seven home runs and 27 RBIs.  This hot streak catapulted him into NL MVP talks.

Braves Pitching

Atlanta’s starter Josh Collmenter pretty much came into the game knowing this could be a job interview for a rotation spot in 2017.  He came prepared.

Collmenter went seven strong innings, gave up six hits, one run, no walks and had four strikeouts.  Can really ask for much more than that from the 30-year-old.  Coming to ATL just a few weeks ago, he went 3-0 with a 3.70 ERA in his short time with the Braves.

More from Braves News

Braves General Manager John Coppolella has said he’ll be looking for a veteran starter for the 2017 season and Collmenter could be that guy.

Jose Ramirez came into the game in the 8th inning.  He gave up a leadoff single to Cesar Hernandez, but then got Freddy Galvis to ground out to Freddie.

Ian Krol replaced Ramirez to face Odubel Herrera and struck him out.

Braves manager Brian Snitker went to his bullpen again and went to Mauricio Cabrera to face Tommy Joseph.  He lined up pretty sharply to left and that was the end of the 8th.

Jim Johnson came into the game for the 9th inning and got two quick outs.  Then gave up two quick singles, but everything was okay….we hoped.  Yup, JJ struck Jimmy Paredes out and that ended the game.
