Braves Prospect Could Possible Have The Best Thing Ever At The End Of His Bat
So this is pretty cool/funny…actually “pretty” isn’t truly the best word — it should have been the most fantastic thing ever! As the Atlanta Braves gear up for the 2017 Opening Day, we look at more of the humor side of baseball tonight.
On August 24, 2016 the Atlanta Braves and GM John Coppolella pulled off a three-team trade with the Miami Marlins and the Texas Rangers. This was the trade that sent Jeff Francoeur to the Miami Marlins and brought Dylan Moore and a catcher named Matt Foley to the Braves.
Maybe you’re too young to recognize the name Matt Foley, maybe it had just slipped your mind or maybe you just never watched this very specific skit.
If so, have no more worries, I’m here to help.
From 1990 to 1996, Christopher Crosby Farley was a prime star at Saturday Night Live. Chris Farley developed many characters in his heyday, but one character has stuck around and is recognized as one of his best-known characters — Matt Foley.
The fictional character on SNL, Matt Foley, was a motivational speaker who first made his appearance in 1993.
If you have no idea what I’m talking about yet…watch the video…
Okay, so let’s circulate this back to the Atlanta Braves Matt Foley.
He was drafted by the Miami Marlins in the 40th round of the 2015 MLB draft out of Rhode Island College. The catcher played the rest of the 2015 season with the Gulf Coast Marlins team as well as 2016 before he was traded to the Braves. He did play in two games with the Marlins Single-A- team.
Since being a member of the Braves organization, he’s only played in one game going 1-3 at the plate. The 22-year-old isn’t a high prospect for the Braves, but you never know in baseball.
The 6’4″ 230-pound catcher had a pretty good junior year at Rhode Island College. He led the league in batting average (.453), RBI (45) and home runs (11).
Foley realizes his name has some history and he plays it up. His personality on twitter is fantastic and you should be following him. @Matt_Foley11
So this season, Foley decided to take his name a step forward. He worked with Pro Helmet Decals to develop this one of a kind bat decal.
They came up with a look that used Chris Farley’s character with an Atlanta Braves hat. It’s fantastic.
A cool side story I saw on Wikipedia — Farley named the character after one of his Marquette rugby teammate. Could this be the Braves Matt Foley’s dad? Ha, joking…but maybe?
