Atlanta Braves News: The Morning Chop, Box Score, Billy Joel, Freddie Freeman’s Blast!
By Jeff Schafer
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: The Atlanta Braves and the Milwaukee Brewers faced off on Friday night in game one of a three-game series at Miller Park. Going into the game with Bartolo Colon on the mound for the Braves, I was pretty confident we’d win this game. About halfway through, I was less confident, when the Braves fought back to tie the game going into the 9th inning extremely confident.
Tied 8-8, Adonis Garcia led off the 9th with a double down the left field line. Freddie Freeman headed to the plate after going 0-4 in the game up until this point. This is when we needed our superstar…and he came through! A bomb to left-center field, over the wall!! I can’t remember the words that came out of my mouth when it happened, but I do remember a lot of screaming. Haha, it’s crazy what sports can do.
Freddie said after the game “I’m just thankful to get another opportunity. I was pretty terrible for the first eight innings.”
Colon didn’t have his best stuff on the mound, he went five innings, gave up 10 hits, six runs, two walks and had five strikeouts. Five of those runs came off two homers. The 43-year-old’s next start is scheduled for May 3rd against the New York Mets.

Bullpen falters as Brewers lose tough one to Braves
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: Did you stay up, stay in, or watch the game at the bar last night? If so, you saw a hell of a game.
Friday night’s game was tied 4-4 heading to the bottom of the 5th inning when the Brewers scored two runs in both the 5th and 6th innings off of Braves starter Bartolo Colon and relief pitcher Jason Motte.
Braves were down 8-4 going into the top of the 7th inning. Then the comeback happened! Braves scored four runs in the 7th and 8th to tie the game. Freddie Freeman followed this up with a huge blast in the top of the 9th inning. Freeman’s two-run homer put the Braves up 10-8!
Oh yeah, we’ll throw this one in there for all the Boni fans — Emilio Bonifacio was used last night as a pinch hitter. He grounded out in the 9th inning. He’s now 0-11 as a pinch hitter in 2017.
"The Milwaukee Brewers had a four-run lead heading into the seventh inning. They had a fresh Jacob Barnes, Corey Knebel, Carlos Torres and Neftali Feliz. And still it wasn’t enough to beat the Atlanta Braves on Friday night.Barnes gave up three runs, Torres one and Feliz two on Freddie Freeman’s ninth-inning home run as the Brewers took a gut-punch of a 10-8 loss at Miller Park.“We had the game set up good,” manager Craig Counsell said. “We were up, 8-4, going into the seventh and had Jacob Barnes throwing. We’ll take that every night."

Billy Joel Plays SunTrust Park On Friday
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: Welp, I’ll admit, I forgot all about this concert. Completely slipped my mind that Billy Joel was going to be at SunTrust Park Friday evening. I’ve had the tremendous opportunity to see Billy Joel twice live and it’s been terrific each time…best concert I’ve been to. The guy just knows how to put on a show still at age 67-years-old.
In case you’re like me and have millions of things running through your head…here’s a reminder of the concerts that are announced in 2017 at SunTrust Park…
Jake Owen – June 10
Metallica – July 9
NEEDTOBREATHE – July 16
MC Hammer – August 19
Fitz and the Tantrums – September 23
"Big-name artists come in and out of metro Atlanta all the time, but on Friday there was none bigger than Billy Joel, who serenaded SunTrust Park in the venue’s first bona fide concert. The performance by the “Uptown Girl” artist came two weeks after the Atlanta Braves opened play at their new ballpark in Cobb County. The singer last came to Atlanta in February 2015 for a concert that got rave reviews at Philips Arena. At the Braves new stadium, he hopes to surpass the effort.“It is a thrill to have one of the greatest entertainers of our time perform the first concert at SunTrust Park,” Derek Schiller, Braves president, business, said in a news release obtained by WSB-TV. “We look forward to hosting Billy Joel and are eager to kick off the first of many concerts at SunTrust Park with such a legendary artist.”"
