Braves calling up Camargo to replace Garcia on 25-man roster

When the Atlanta Braves announced yesterday that Adonis Garcia was being placed on the 10-day disabled list, many speculations began.  Who was going to take this roster spot?!?

Did the Braves have many options here?  No, but did have a couple for us to talk about.  Alan gave us his speculations yesterday afternoon about who could be receiving the call.

A few options that I saw thrown around — top prospect Ozzie Albies, third baseman Rio Ruiz, outfielder Lane Adams, outfielder Mel Rojas Jr and infielder Johan Camargo.

Nope, it’s not time yet for Albies.

Ruiz is a lefty that is having trouble hitting lefties.  Splitting time with left-handed batter Jace Peterson wouldn’t be beneficial for the Braves.  Not Ruiz.

Adam and Rojas?  Well, Braves just want to give them more time in Gwinnett…I guess.

Camargo?  He’s your guy!

The 23-year-old has a slash line of .307/.340/.466 with the Gwinnett Braves in 2017 with three homers, five doubles, 15 RBIs and one stolen base.

This will be Camargo’s second MLB stint as he played with the Braves earlier this season.  He appeared in five games with four at-bats.  He struck out in three of those AB’s and got a single and an RBI in the other.

Camargo is a guy you can play at shortstop, third base or second base.  He’s that utility guy that the Braves organization loves, but he could be much more.  Instead of being just a utility guy, Camargo has the potential to be more like a Martin Prado or Omar Infante.

The Braves signed Camargo out of Panama in the 2010 July 2nd international free agent class.  He suffered a season-long injury in 2011and eventually made his professional debut in 2012 in the Dominican Summer League.  He hit .343/.433/.455 with two homers and six stolen bases, posting a 10.37% walk rate and an 11.2% strikeout rate in 59 games in the DSL.

The 6’0″ 160-pound switch hitter, has a very contact-oriented approach at the plate from both sides and is a very solid defender.

I wouldn’t mind the Braves and Brian Snitker giving Camargo a few starts at third base while Garcia is on the DL.  I like Jace Peterson at third, but let’s see what we’ve got in Camargo!
