Atlanta Braves News: Chop, Box, DFA’d Josh Collmenter, Recalled Matt Wisler
By Jeff Schafer
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: Last night’s defeat was a real heartbreaker. The Atlanta Braves were one strike away from winning that ball game…ONE! The Braves offense did their job, collecting 14 hits on Wednesday and Julio Teheran did his, throwing six innings, giving up four hits, no earned runs (three unearned), two walks and had six strikeouts.
Braves relief pitcher Jose Ramirez just couldn’t close the door in the 9th inning. He gave up two straight singles to Pirate hitters and then settled down. Ramirez got a fly ball out and a strikeout looking. Okay, two outs, two on…he can do this. David Freeze and Ramirez had an eight-pitch battle, but it resulted in a walk. Next guy up, Jose Osuna singled between Rio Ruiz at third and Dansby Swanson at short. Two runs scored to tie the game.
Then that 10th inning happened…see our recap if you’d like to relive it or just see what the hell happened.

Extended rehab assignment for Braves’ Garcia
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: A few days ago, we thought Adonis Garcia would return to the Braves the first game he was eligible…Friday. But it now sounds like that will not be the case. Garcia is ready to return to action, but he will play in a few rehab games prior to rejoining the big league squad.
Which means a few things…more days for Rio Ruiz to prove he’s ready to stay up in Atlanta AND a couple more days of Emilio Bonifacio on the roster. Though, during his media interview, Brian Snitker did mention they could drop a pitcher from the eight-man bullpen they currently have. I think that move is just ridiculous…especially after the game last night.
Boni should be DFA when Garcia is ready to roll.
"Braves manager Brian Snitker said third baseman Adonis Garcia is scheduled to spend a few days on a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett before he will be activated from the disabled list."
"Garcia has been on the 10-day DL since May 16 because of left Achilles tendinitis. He’s eligible to be added to the active roster Friday, but Snitker said Garcia would play for Gwinnett while the Braves go to San Francisco on Friday to begin a nine-game trip."
"“He plays and roughs it up and the next day (soreness) and all of that kind of stuff,” Snitker said Wednesday. “So we just make sure he’s good when he comes back. Which I think he (will) be but coming out of the box, first-step reaction and stuff like that (need to be tested). It’s one of them injuries that can bite you so I just want to make sure.”"

Braves’ Josh Collmenter: Annihilated in 10th inning
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: Around the fourth or fifth run given up last night by Collmenter, we kinda had the feeling we wouldn’t see much more of the right-hander. The 31-year-old just got pounded in the 10th inning of Wednesday night’s game. He gave up six hits (three were homers), seven runs and one walk.
Collmenter’s first outing of 2017 was against the Pirates on April 7 and he gave up three hits (two were homers) and two runs. Maybe the guy just couldn’t get Pittsburgh out?
Well, no. He had a very solid end of April where he pitched in four games without giving up a run and walked only one. Then, in May he lost it. Five of his six outings in May he’s given up at least one run.
Atlanta made it official on Thursday morning that Collmenter has been designated for assignment and that they will be recalling Matt Wisler.
Wisler is in a weird state currently with the Braves. When they call him up, he’s a relief pitcher but when he’s with the Gwinnett Braves he’s a starter. In his last start with Gwinnett, May 20, he gave up 12 hits and six runs to the Durham Bulls in 5.1 innings pitched. He currently holds a 5.20 ERA with Gwinnett and a 12.60 ERA with the Atlanta Braves.
Hopefully the 24-year-old can turn it around this time up in ATL.
"Josh Collmenter (0-2) gave up seven runs on six hits and a walk in the 10th inning of Wednesday’s loss to the Pirates. After the Pirates went ahead against him, manager Brian Snitker left Collmenter in to take his lumps and save the rest of the bullpen, and he proceeded to give up three homers in his inning of work. With his 9.00 ERA and 2.06 WHIP in mostly low-leverage work out of Atlanta’s bullpen, it’s hard to imagine the sort of fantasy roster where Collmenter might find a home."
