The Atlanta Braves dropped game one of a double header today with the New York Mets. Sean Newcomb dazzled in his Major League debut but late inning offense, and some questionable decisions doom Braves.

Atlanta Braves prospect Sean Newcomb went 6 1/3 inning giving up 4 hits and one earned run. Newk was dealing for the start. He fanned 9 Met hitters and was lifted in the 6th for Jason Motte, after Newk gave up a single; he aslo walked 2.

Jason Motte came on to finish the 6th for the Braves and got Juan Lugares to line back to himself and doubled off Gsellman at first to retire the side.

Speaking of Robert Gsellman, he was equally as good as Sean Newcomb. Gsellman lasted 6 2/3 innings. He allowed only 3 hits and didn’t give up a run and struck out 4 while walking 2.

The Mets got their lone run in the 2nd inning. Wilmer Flores led off the inning with a single, and Asdrubel Cabrera reached on a froce attempt.

As Flores went to second, Newcomb fielded a comebacker, wanted to start a double play and threw the baseball into center field. Flores stopped at 3rd.

T. J. Rivera lifted a SAC fly to Ender Inciarte and that allowed Flores to scamper home for the only run of the game.

Luke Jackson came in to replace Motte. He proceeded to hit Michael Conforto, allow a single to Yoenis Cespedes, and then wild pitched them to 3rd and 2nd. Then, Flores, again, adds a run on a SAC fly to Inciarte pushing the Mets to a 2-0 lead.

In the Braves half of the ninth, Brandon Phillips made it a run one game again. He led off the 8th with a line drive home run off Mets hurler Salas.

After a quick out, Tyler Flowers roped a grounder Mets third baseman Jose Reyes couldn’t handle, their third error of the game, and Tyler beat the throw from Reyes.

Matt Adams followed that up with a single back up the middle to put runners on 2nd and 3rd and with one out. The Braves, however, came away with only the run from the BP big fly.

In the 9th, after a HBP from Luke Jackson, a single, with one out, the Braves Dugout Braintrust of Snitker and Associates, thought it to be a good idea to load the bases and pitch to Yoenis Cespedis, with one out.

As one would expect, that didn’t work out too well. Cespedis blasted a deep fly to center that just got over the wall for a Grand Slam and a now, 6-1 Mets lead.

The Braves went fairly quietly in the bottom half, and the Braves dropped game one of the double header, 6-1.

The night cap will feature Steven Matz for the Mets, and Matt Wisler for the Braves. First pitch is slated for just after 6:00 PM EDT. We’ll have the recap for you after that one as well.
