Braves place Garcia on the DL…will miss significant time

More bad news for the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday afternoon…they will have to place Adonis Garcia on the disabled list and he will be out for a while.

On Monday, Garcia had surgery to repair ligament damage on his left ring finger.  The doctor who completed the surgery was Dr. Gary Lourie in Atlanta.

Garcia was placed on the 10-day DL on June 7 with the finger issue, but it was originally believed to be not a significant injury.  When placed on the DL, the Braves called it a “sprained left ring finger.”  Guess it was more…

The 32-year-old is now expected to miss two months of action.

Now, what do the Braves do?

This announcement greatly benefits two guys…Rio Ruiz and Johan Camargo.

Both guys will be given the opportunity to show what they can do in the big leagues over the next two months.  This is a great chance for these youngsters to prove they can play at this level.

Yes, Ruiz has played in 25 games with the Atlanta Braves in 2017 (started 18 games at third base so far), but now he doesn’t have the presence of a veteran looking over his shoulder.  This will be his position….how will he handle it?

This will be his position….how will he handle it?

The 23-year-old is slashing .209/.312/.343 during his time in Atlanta with two home runs, three doubles, 14 runs scored, eight RBIs, nine walks, and 19 strikeouts.

In the field, Ruiz has committed only two errors and currently holds a .962 fielding percentage.

Camargo has shown a lot of promise in his short time in the bigs.  His left-handed swing looks so nice and I’d love to see it in the lineup even more.  He’s only started five games for the Braves, but has been used in 17 games so far…mostly as a pinch hitter.

The 23-year-old has a slash line of .233/.258/.367 with one triple, two doubles, four runs scored and seven RBIs.  With the injury to Garcia, I’m really looking forward to seeing more Camargo!

Next Two Months

Garcia will be missed and he should be…but not because he’s our third baseman.  I don’t think he should be starting at third with both Ruiz and Camargo on the roster.  Garcia could be a very good pinch hitter coming off the bench for the Braves…and that’s how they should use him when he returns.

Next: Braves got some power arms in the MLB Draft on Day 2

So hypothetically, the Braves could get Garcia, Sean Rodriguez and Freddie Freeman all back around the same time.  Interesting.

Also interesting is what are the Braves going to do with the roster/lineup when these guys do start returning.  Braves GM John Coppolella will have some very busy summer months ahead of him.
