Atlanta Braves News: The Morning Chop, Box Score, Kyle Wright & Drew Waters Sign, Matt Kemp to DL?
By Jeff Schafer
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: The Atlanta Braves struggled to get anything going on Friday night against the Marlins and their starting pitcher Dan Straily. The Braves were only able to get four hits off of Straily in 6.1 innings and then zero hits off the Marlins bullpen. Ender Inciarte led off the bottom of the 1st inning with a double. Things looked bright and then…uhh…nothing.
The Braves got three singles throughout the game, never in the same inning, and went quiet on the scoreboard.
Atlanta’s starting pitcher, Sean Newcomb, pitched another solid game on Friday night. He lasted six innings, gave up five hits, three runs, four walks and had three strikeouts. Not too bad, but could be better. The 24-year-old at least kept the Braves in the game. In Newcomb’s two professional starts, the Braves offense hasn’t scored a single run. That will need to change.

Braves aim for fences in inking top pick Kyle Wright to record deal
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: Wow! Braves and Wright reach a deal just four days after being drafted…which means a few things…the Braves and Wright may have talked prior to the draft about a possible deal, the Braves were willing to go to the extreme to sign this talent and Wright wasn’t in the mood to negotiate and wants to get on the mound as quickly as he can.
Wright signed a contract with a $7 million signing bonus! That’s the largest deal given since MLB altered its draft signing process under the current collective bargaining agreement. The Braves felt like the drafted the best player in the draft and they surely paid for it. It’s the most money the Braves organization has ever invested in a single draft pick! That’s 70% of their $9.9M pool allotment the Braves have in 2017.
The Braves are prepared to send Wright to the Gulf Coast Rookie League, but said he could move up “very quickly.”
Oh, and news this morning I’m just seeing! Braves sign 2nd pick (41st overall) Drew Waters as well.
"Fresh off placing his signature on the largest financial windfall of baseball’s modern draft era, Kyle Wright and his family made the rounds at SunTrust Park, his presumed future home, on Friday afternoon.“It’s very comforting,” said Wright, the No. 5 selection in the 2017 draft, of how quickly the signing process unfolded. “Just to know that I’m here and that I’m a part of this great organization is really important to me. I feel like it’s going to allow me to be successful. Don’t really have to deal with anything going back and forth. Just to know that we’re on the same page the whole time is something that means a lot to me because it means that (the Braves) were very supportive of me. They always had my back about the whole thing.“Just to be able to get it done so quick is really special.”"
Braves remain hopeful Matt Kemp (hamstring) will avoid disabled list
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: The Atlanta Braves outfielder left Wednesday night’s game after sliding into third base and grabbing his hamstring. He was originally thought to be back in the lineup on Friday night, but it looks as though he’ll need a few days…and hopefully not a DL stint.
The 32-year-old outfielder is hitting .327 with 19 doubles, 32 RBIs, and 11 homers.
In April, Kemp missed nine games because of a sore right hamstring. Maybe Kemp needs to stretch more or eat more bananas. The Braves lineup is extremely thin with both Kemp and Freddie Freeman missing from it. Tyler Flowers batted 4th in Kemp’s absence and Danny Santana played left field. I’m guessing Kemp sits out this Marlins series and returns Monday against the Giants.
"Braves left fielder Matt Kemp is listed as day-to-day with a sore left hamstring and hopes to avoid the 10-day disabled list for the second time this season.Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said the team will wait a couple of days before reassessing Kemp’s condition. Danny Santana took his spot in the field for Friday night’s game against Miami.“His strength is good,” Snitker said. “He’s got a tweak and a little tightness. It’ll be a day-to-day thing for a while.”"
