McCann Likely Heading To DL, Braves To Recall Sammons

The hits just keep on coming.

It was one thing when left fielder Garret Anderson was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday afternoon, but now it appears All-Star catcher Brian McCann will be joining him.

McCann was a late scratch from last night’s lineup after the blurred vision in his left eye returned.

Both David O’ Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution and MLB.com’s Mark Bowman have reported that the Braves could make the move today.

The team would call up AAA Gwinnett catcher Clint Sammons.

"“I feel like with my contact in, my eye every five seconds, it’s blurry again,” McCann told MLB.com. “It’s just dry and I’m not seeing good out of it.”"

McCann will likely undergo Lasik surgery — a procedure he had after the 2007 season — as  several attempts to correct the vision through the single contact have failed.

"“I’d rather take a couple of weeks and get this squared away,” McCann told the AJC, “so I can finish the season. It just got to the point where I wasn’t helping the team and wasn’t helping myself.”"

Manager Bobby Cox also told reporters he would like to make a decision this weekend rather than wait as David  Ross is the team’s only viable catcher.

This seems to be the best option for the Braves. There is really no use in waiting if McCann’s vision isn’t improving. Speaking for all Atlanta fans, I would much rather have him at full strength for the stretch run of the season than to wonder day-to-day if his eye will get better.
