Atlanta Braves Under the Radar Signings

facebooktwitterreddit

Well, we have had a whole lot going on, haven’t we Atlanta Braves fans?

And make no mistake, my personal and professional life have been busier than ever!  Sorry for such a long delay between my last time posting here at Tomahawk Take.  For one, I’m a school teacher and the end of quarters are so hectic that when I walk into the door of my own house, my wife looks at me strangely as if I’m some vagabond wandering drunk and aimlessly into any house that will accept me.

And, oh yeah!  I’m going to be a Dad. At the end of August, my wife and I are going to be welcoming a young one into our lives.  Remember way back in my last paragraph where I mentioned busy? Well, I’m sure it’s not going to get any less now that I’ll have an infant soon. Question: Can I let the dogs watch the baby while I go play disc golf? I guess that would be frowned upon, huh?

More from Tomahawk Take

And last but not least, my wife and I took a 10-day trip up the east coast with our 2 dogs in an RV.  It was great… all except we almost died in Birmingham when we ran over what must have been The Vulcan lying across I-59 North during a torrential downpour (not sure how we escaped, or how the RV was still in 1 piece), the RV smelled like a mixture of wet dog, old poop, campfire, and unwashed humans.  And last but not least, the RV’s sewage drain, which was supposed to be completely emptied by your’s truly (I swear I did it!) apparently was not, and there was some weird mixture of…ah geez, I don’t know, gross, unimaginable things, that poured out onto the ground…and myself.  Learning experience, right?  Really, it was great and if you haven’t been to Asheville, NC, or made it to Jekyll Island, make plans to do so as both places are well worth the visit. Ok, I’ll shut up about all the me stuff and get on to the goods…

March and April’s Atlanta Braves signings

We all know the big stories, they’ve been covered to a point of nausea, but we might need a refresher of the small signings/trades/claims over the last few months.

March

Peter Moylan (RHP)- Minor League Contract- We all know Moylan and what he has meant to the organization.  He’s coming back after his 2nd Tommy John Surgery. Apparently in the best shape of his life, Moylan could compete for a bullpen spot later on this year. Moylan has been assigned to the Danville Braves while he’s rehabbing.

Dustin Bare (RHP)- Minor League Contract- Signed out of the Indy Leagues, not much is known about him but he’s a knuckle ball pitcher and that’s always fun! He’s been assigned to the GCL Braves.

Sean Furney (RHP)- Minor Leaguer Acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks- 23 year old Starting Pitcher went unsigned until the Diamondbacks gave him a go in 2013.  Big guy likely just organizational filler.  Fastball sits in low-90s. He’s been assigned to Low-A Rome.

April

Adonis Garcia (OF)- Minor League Contract- Signed by the Yankees  in 2011 out of Cuba for 400K, Garcia is a 5 foot 9, 29 year old OF with 2nd and 3rd base experience. Had an .827 OPS last year and has some good pop but sees very few walks.  He will start this season at AAA and could get a look in Atlanta if other options fail and/or get traded. For now, he’s listed as a 3rd baseman on AAA Gwinnett’s roster.

Matt Capps (RHP)- Re-signed Minor League Contract- Was signed to a Minor League deal earlier this offseason, released (likely to look for other employment), then re-signed later.  Capps, a former closer, has reportedly lost a few MPHs but could be effective if he finds his “stuff” again. He’s been assigned to AAA Gwinnett.

Tyler Jones (RHP)- Minor Leage Contract- This offseason, Tyler ranked as the 29th best prospect in the Minnesota Twins organization.  It’s interesting that the Braves didn’t find value in J.R. Graham, leaving him unprotected, and the Twins scooped him up, and vice versa, the Braves scoop up Tyler. Tyler, in the mold of Juan Jaime, can either walk or strike out the house.  Hopefully he can harness his control out of the bullpen and be a force somewhere in the organization. He will report to High-A Carolina.

Which Atlanta Braves MILB signing excites me?

Truth be told, none of these guys really excite me off hand, but I’d love to see Peter Moylan squeeze a few more successful years out, and I’d love nothing more than for him to do it in a Braves uniform.  Also, the Cuban Adonis Garcia brings a slight intrigue as he has interesting flexibility with having experience at 2b, 3b, and the OF.  Keep an eye on these guys, especially the guys that have been assigned to the upper-minors. If the Braves fall out of contention later this year and start trading off their veterans, we might see some of them in Atlanta before season’s end.

Go Braves!
