Atlanta Braves Minor League Ag Report: Rome Braves (22-24)

Rome started off their week well with a Monday victory over Charleston, 4-2. Max Povse went 5 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, 2 walks, and 8 strikeouts with stud Yankee shortstop prospect Jorge Mateo‘s 5th inning home run being the only runs he allowed. Mateo stole three bases on the day and has 32 (!!!) on the season, but his shortstop counterpart, equally hyped Braves shortstop prospect Ozhaino Albies must have felt the pressure as he got on base twice and stole 2 bases of his own to bring his season total to 19. Joey Terdoslavich got the start in left field as he returns from an injury, and he went 2/4 with a double. Tanner Murphy also collected two hits and a walk, and Omar Obregon was on base twice and stole two bases as well.

Charleston and Rome had a pitcher’s duel through 5 innings Tuesday before Rome scored 8 runs in the next three innings to win 8-1. Alec Grosser threw 6 innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4. The 1-3 guys in the Rome order all collected 2 hits with Ozhaino Albies getting two hits and two walks, Omar Obregon getting two hits and a double, and Joey Terdoslavich adding two hits. Braxton Davidson was on base three times with a single and 2 walks.

Ozhaino Albies had two hits, including a double, and Omar Obregon had 2 hits and a steal on the day. Rome drew 6 walks in the game, including 2 by Tanner Murphy.

Braves Minor League Ag Report: Carolina Mudcats (19-22)

The Mudcats losing streak continued on Monday as they dropped their 10th game in a row, remaining winless since their bus crashed after their May 11th game. The 5-1 loss to Wilmington was started by Blair Walters, and he threw a solid game, going 6 scoreless innings before giving up a walk and a single in the 7th that the bullpen allowed to score, giving Walters the loss. He totaled 2 hits allowed on the day along with 2 walks and a strikeout. Connor Lien was the only Mudcat with multiple hits as he had 2 hits, including a double. Joey Meneses and Carlos Franco each hit doubles and catcher Joseph Odom clubbed his first home run of the year.

Jacksonville clipped Mississippi on Monday with a 5-3 win over the M-Braves. Victor Mateo got the start for the Braves and went 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and 5 walks while striking out two. To get more detail on Mateo’s role in the start, check out my profile of him released on Wednesday. After a day off on Tuesday, Mississippi hosted Pensacola on Wednesday and nearly played two games, going to the 14th inning before Pensacola won 7-5. Jason Hursh got the start and went 6 innings, giving up 2 runs on 8 hits and a walk while striking out 8. I have a more in-depth look at that start in an article coming later today. The bullpen then threw 7 solid innings before giving up 3 runs in the 14th. The M-Braves got back one run in the bottom of the inning, but couldn’t get enough to tie the game back up. Mallex Smith had 2 hits and a stolen base, and Matt Lipka and Seth Loman each added two hits. The Braves drew 8 walks on the day, and KD Lang and Corban Joseph each contributed 2 walks apiece to the tally. Eric Garcia slapped a triple for the only extra base hit of the day.

The Monday game was delayed to Wednesday, and the Tuesday game was postponed due to rain. Matt Wisler started the Monday game against Lehigh Valley, and he was throwing well, going 2 scoreless innings with two hits and a strikeout on the start before the rains came. Chien-Ming Wang went 7 innings Wednesday in the resumed game, allowing 2 runs on 9 hits and one walk while striking out 2 for the win as Gwinnett took the game 8-2. Interestingly, Chris Johnson started this game on a rehab assignment, but when the game was resumed Wednesday, Johnson was in the majors. Barrett Kleinknecht had three hits, including his 3rd home run on the season. Cedric Hunter had 3 hits. Sean Kazmar had two hits and a double while Adonis Garcia had two hits as well. Braeden Schlehuber added a double to the offense. Eury Perez made the most of his only time on base, stealing two bases to bring his season total to 24.

The scheduled game on Wednesday ended up being a solid win for Gwinnett, 4-1. Sugar Ray Marimon got the start for Gwinnett, and he went 6 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7. Jose Peraza collected two hits, playing CF and 2B on the day. Wil Nieves added a double. The Braves made the most of their runners on base, turning 3 walks and 5 hits into 4 runs.

Weekend matchups:

Thursday, 5:05pm ET: Manny Banuelos vs. Lehigh Valley (Phillippe Aumont)
Thursday, game 2: Kanekoa Texeira vs. Lehigh Valley (Jason Berken)
Friday, 7:05pm ET:  TBD (Cody Martin, if he isn’t called up) vs. Columbus (TBD)
Saturday, 7:05pm ET: TBD (Matt Wisler‘s spot) vs. Columbus {TBD)
Sunday, 2:05pm ET: TBD (Chien-Ming Wang‘s spot) vs. Columbus (TBD)

That’s All, Folks!

Carolina will have many opportunities to break out of their funk this weekend with 6 games on the weekend. The rain outs could lead to some shuffling in Gwinnett’s rotation, and right now, I’m very intrigued to see Wisler go again as his start Monday to the game was incredible before the rains came. Wang could earn his way to filling a spot like Eric Stults had in the Braves bullpen before the big trade. I am excited to see how Chris Withrow may fit into the bullpen mix between Mississippi and Gwinnett. Speaking of Mississippi, their team is really clicking on all cylinders and fun to watch as I’ve done the Mateo and Hursh write ups recently.
