The Braves third round draft pick was completely off the wall. Anthony Guardado is an unranked pitcher out of Nogales High School in La Puente, Calif. who also played quarterback on the football team. (Check off multisport athlete box)

There’s not much out there on Guardado because is football kept him off the big event tours.  A football related shoulder injury kept him from playing until April but in his first start surprised scouts there to watch Peter Lambert by lighting up there guns with a 94 mph fastball.  He stayed at 93-94 throughout the game and featured a hard slider as his out pitch.  He also showed a curve and a change that are works in progress but have potential to be at least average.

In a post on MLB.Com a scout made this comment to Jonathan Mayo.

"“These guys are football players. I like football players. They’re not going to complain about Minor League Baseball in the dog days. They’re used to double sessions.”"

I have no idea who that was but the philosophy sounds oddly familiar.

Guardado apparently will sign. Max Preps just reported that he has uncommitted to Atlanta Braves baseball. Here’s a look at him pitching.
