Braves Pitcher Brandon White Answers Our Questions

Atlanta Braves longest tenured Brandon White sits down and answers a couple questions for us – see what I did there?  The Braves selected two Brandon White’s during last weeks draft.  Think that’s strange?  Well get this, Atlanta selected the two BW’s in back-to-back rounds (12th and 13th) and they are both right-handed pitchers.  Yup, this should be fun to watch throughout their careers.

We chatted with the Brandon White that was selected with the 349th pick in the 12th round from Lander University.  He was nice enough to share some of his time prior to heading down to Orlando.  White signed on the dotted lines on Thursday with the Braves and is already down in Orlando ready to go.

It was nice getting to know Brandon a little and to see another piece of our puzzle of what we have to look forward to.

Tomahawk Take: What was your initial reaction when you heard your name called by the Atlanta Braves?

Brandon White: When I got the call from the Braves I was so jacked up. Just to get drafted is a feeling you can’t describe but getting drafted by the “hometown” team makes it that much better.

TT: Did you have a favorite MLB team growing up? Why?

BW: The Braves! I grew up watching them with my grandfather in Barnwell, South Carolina and watching the 1995 World Series VCR over and over again.

TT: What’s your favorite sport other than baseball? Why?

BW: Football. Growing up in Columbia, South Carolina every Saturday from September to December is filled with football. It turns into a family event every Saturday I am at home.

TT: Were you confused when you heard the Atlanta Braves say your name again in the 13th round? What do you think it will be like having two Brandon White’s?

BW: Honestly I didn’t watch any of the draft. I kind of just stayed by my phone. But when I heard it I thought it was something that have never happened so I think it’s pretty cool. I think it will be great, looking forward to meeting him and the rest of the guys.

More from Tomahawk Take

TT: Going to school at Lander University in SC, were you able to attend Braves games or have a favorite Braves player?

BW: Never attended a game while I was in college but we did watch a lot of games. Never really a favorite player just always enjoyed learning and watching the game more.

TT: You started some games in college, but you were used mostly as a reliever…Is that what you prefer moving forward?

BW: Just feel more comfortable out of the bullpen but whatever I have to do I will do. Really no preference.

TT: In your junior year, you appeared in 33 games, 40.1 innings pitched had an ERA of 1.12, 4-2 record with 14 saves. A great stat I see is 60 strikeouts compared to 14 walks and only 5 earned runs throughout the year. How do you rank your 2016 season?

BW: I would say one of the best. Was trying to do everything I could to help Lander University win a national championship but we came up just a bit short. It was a great year for my team and myself so that’s why I rank it the best.

TT: What pitches are in your arsenal? Do you have a strikeout pitch?

BW: Fastball, slider, curveball. My strikeout pitch is the slider.

TT: We’ve seen relief pitchers in the past with intimidating looks on the mound, do you have anything like this?

BW: No sir nothing like that!

TT: What was your greatest achievement at Lander University?

BW: Going to 2 World Series in 3 years.

TT: What are you most proud of throughout your playing career (college, HS, AAU, etc)

BW: First off, having the opportunity to play college baseball then having the chance to play professional baseball with the Atlanta Braves organization.

TT: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

BW: Continuing my baseball career and continue becoming the best pitcher I can be.
