Atlanta Braves News: The Morning Chop, Box Score, Chipper Jones Talks About Future
By Jeff Schafer
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: The Atlanta Braves took down the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday to split the four-game series. The Braves improved to 47-81 and the DBacks are now 53-75. Remember when they had just high hopes for the 2016 season that they went “all in” and traded their previous number one draft pick? Yup, Dansby is ours now! Swanson went 4-13 at the plate against his former team and made a few great plays at shortstop in this series. Wisler had a great night on the mound and Freddie Freeman survived an awful looking fall. For a look at his scary tumble, here it is. After the game, Swanson talked with Kelsey Wingert on the Post Game Show.

Matt Wisler, Atlanta Braves shut down Arizona Diamondbacks
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: Braves starting pitcher Matt Wisler pitched an outstanding game on Thursday. He didn’t allow a hit until the 7th inning and in all went eight innings, gave up two hits, one run, three walks and had four strikeouts. Wisler picked up his fifth win of the 2016 season with the Atlanta Braves. He did allow a one-out walk in the 1st inning and a two-out walk in the 3rd, but other than that, he was marvelous in the early going. If he can continue to pitch like he did last night, we’ve got our #2 starter back!
"Matt Wisler, called up from Triple-A in time to start Thursday night’s game for the Atlanta Braves, didn’t allow the Arizona Diamondbacks a hit for six innings and led the Braves to a 3-1 victory. The 23-year-old Wisler (5-11) allowed a run and two hits with four strikeouts and three walks in eight innings. Jim Johnson pitched the ninth inning for his 12th save.Paul Goldschmidt broke up Wisler’s no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the seventh. Goldschmidt scored on Chris Owings’ groundout."
Chipper Jones likes Braves’ future but says moves needed
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: Jeff Schultz of the Atlanta Journal Constitution had an interview with Chipper Jones yesterday about everything from what he’s doing now to how he sees the Braves doing in the future. Chipper is just one of those athletes that you grasp to every word they say when they say it. One thing that caught my eye when reading over this transcript of the interview was that Chipper still has little intentions of putting back on the uniform and coaching. He actually says in talking with Schultz that he has interest in a front office job with the Braves. I’d guess whatever pays the bills and his golfing outings…but like he really needs to worry about expenses.
"Q: How would you describe your duties as an advisor with the Braves?A: I do different things. Obviously, a lot was amped up before the draft. I looked at a few (potential draft picks). It was kind of a hectic summer, so I wasn’t able to see some of our young kids in the minors like I wanted. I’m going to some games and if somebody’s struggling, I’ll take a look. (General manager John Coppolella) and I talk every couple of weeks. I’m kind of a jack of all trades, master of none.Q: Did you have higher expectations this year?A: I thought the club would swing the bats the way they’re swinging them now. I thought they would score more runs and, you would imagine, win more games. Unfortunately the offense sputtered coming out of the gate, the pitching was respectable to very good at times and now it seems the two are reversed. With injuries and inconsistencies, they’re taking losses. I don’t know if I would say disappointed. Frustrated is the word I would use. With young players on a young team, guys have to learn how to win. They haven’t quite grasped how to step on somebody’s neck when they have them down."
