Quick Notes About the 2016 Season

  • The final first pitch was thrown out by three Hall-of-Famers:  John Smoltz, Greg Maddux, and Tom Glavine.  In total, five Hall inductees were on the field as they were joined by Bobby Cox and Chipper Jones as part of the All-Turner Field Team.
  • The cermonial last number tear-down for the last home game was performed by… everybody:  the entire ATFT  gathered for the honor.
  • Bobby Cox tore down the “1” while John Schuerholz tore down another panel revealing ‘SunTrust Park – Opening Day April 14, 2017’.
  • For all those who pointed at Dansby Swanson’s .261 batting average at AA Mississippi and suggested that he wasn’t ready for the majors… he posted a .301/.358/.439 slash line entering play today in 36 games.
  • Speaking of Swanson, his rookie status is intact for 2017…. barely.
  • Two-bit the Drill won the final Tool Race.  Phil the Bucket was reportedly crushed.
  • The last home run – by a visitor:  Justin Upton.
  • The last home run by a Brave:  Nick Markakis
  • The last hit:  Adonis Garcia
  • The last stolen base:  Adonis Garcia
  • The last RBI:  Freddie Freeman
  • The last strikeout:  Jim Johnson (Upton)
  • The last run scored:  Ender Inciarte
  • Attendance for the series:  41,500 (Friday), 40,124 (Saturday). 51,220 (Sunday).  2,020,914 for the entire season.
  • Umpires:  John Hirschbeck (H), Bill Welke (1), D.J. Reyburn (2), Vic Carapazza (3)

Also of note:  while today was the last broadcast games for Vin Scully and Dick Enberg, it also marks the retirement of Braves’ broadcaster Joe Simpson, as announced during the 8th inning today.

The Braves finish 2016 at 68-93.  Very solid end to a tumultuous and often tortuous season.
