Braves Call Up Hursh to Help Save Bullpen

The Atlanta Braves shuffle things up a bit in their bullpen on Wednesday afternoon as Chaz Roe goes on the disabled list with a right lat strain.  The corresponding move was to call up right-handed pitcher Jason Hursh from Gwinnett.

Is Hursh the savior in Atlanta?  Man, I hope so, but don’t count your chickens just yet.  Let’s just hope he can help.

So far in 2017 with the Gwinnett Braves (Triple-A), Hursh has pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings, gave up three hits, no walks and struck out four batters.

Hursh appeared with the Atlanta Braves in 2016, but it didn’t go well.  He pitched in two games giving up four hits, five earned runs, three walks and had one strikeout.

The 25-year-old was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 1st round of the 2013 MLB Draft (31st overall pick) out of Oklahoma State University — he was drafted out of high school by the Pittsburg Pirates in the 6th round of the 2010 MLB Draft, but decided to go to school.

Atlanta drafted Hursh to be a starting pitcher, but was converted to the bullpen halfway into the 2015 season.

The 6’3″ 200-pounder has the stuff to be a major league pitcher as his four-seam fastball can run in the high ‘90s with a sinking trajectory.

Hursh is on the Braves 40-man roster so the move won’t affect that roster at all.  He has two options remaining.

Chaz Given Time To Collect Thoughts

Roe will visit the 10-day DL with a “lat strain” as he last pitched on Friday, April 7.  He’s going to be eligible to return next Tuesday, April 18.  Is this an injury or a “hey, you’re not pitching well, take a few days off” deal.

The 30-year-old has appeared in three games so far in 2017.  He’s given up four runs (two earned) off three hits and two walks.

Atlanta selected Roe off waivers on August 7, 2016 from the Baltimore Orioles.  He resigned with the team with a one-year deal worth $720,000 this past offseason.

Braves Bullpen Looks….

I’ll go ahead and finish that with this …just a little bit better than our bench.

Going into the 2017 Spring Training season, I was happy with the pitchers the Braves had in the pen.  Then a few injuries happened and attitude issues (Paco Rodriguez) got in the way.

Where’s The Other Flame-Thrower?

Mauricio Cabrera has been sidelined since March 30th with elbow soreness.  He’s currently on the 10-day DL, but is on his way back!

The 23-year-old is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Wednesday (today).  He was suppose to throw this on Monday, but it got pushed back.

Looks like he’ll return to the Braves bullpen by the end of April.
