Eight Atlanta Braves Prospects Make Baseball America’s Top 100 List

A little over a month into the 2017 season Baseball America has released its latest top 100 professional prospects list, and not surprisingly plenty of Braves farm hands made the cut.

Baseball America released its latest Top 100 Prospects list on Thursday, and eight Atlanta Braves minor league players were included.

Topping the list for Atlanta was infield prospect Ozzie Albies in at No. 8 overall. Albies split the 2016 season between triple-A Gwinnett and double-A Mississippi and won the Southern League batting title. He’s currently hitting .248/.287/.376 at Gwinnett.

The next three Braves on Baseball America’s top 100 were all pitchers. No. 28 Kolby Allard and No. 44 Mike Soroka are both assigned to Mississippi, while No. 60 Ian Anderson is currently at Rome.

Allard and Soroka each had extremely successful 2016 campaigns as part of a South Atlantic League Championship run for the low-A Rome Braves, and are both skipped advanced-A in their promotions straight to the Mississippi staff.

Anderson was Atlanta’s top pick in 2016, and spent the summer in Orlando and Danville at the rookie level and is currently 2-2 with a 3.21 ERA at Rome.

Another big piece to the SAL title run for Rome last season was outfield prospect Ronald Acuna who came in at No. 62 on the top 100 ranking. Acuna started this season at the Florida Fire Frogs, but was called up to double-A in just over a month. He’s hitting a combined .307/.355/.528 so far this season.

Another infielder making the list for Atlanta was 17-year-old international prospect Kevin Maitan out of Cabello, Venezuela. The Braves signed Maitan last summer for a reported $4.25 million at age 16. He’s been compared to Chipper Jones and Miguel Cabrera by some and came in at No. 71.

Next up for the Braves at No. 72 on Baseball America’s list was left handed pitching prospect Sean Newcomb, who is currently 2-2 at Gwinnett with a 2.89 ERA through 37.1 innings. He came to Atlanta from the Angels with Erick Aybar, Chris Ellis and cash in the Andrelton Simmons trade back in 2015.

Finally, in at No. 94, is pitcher Louiz Gohara. The lefty was acquired by the Braves, along with left-hander Thomas Burrows from Seattle for Mallex Smith and Shae Simmons in January.

Gohara started the season at advanced-A and was promoted to double-A this week. He is currently a combined 3-1 with a 1.98 ERA through 36.1 innings this season. He already has 39 strikeouts with only 10 walks.
