Atlanta Braves News: Morning Chop, MLB Mock Draft, Mike Soroka Dominating
By Jeff Schafer
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: The Atlanta Braves took down the Miami Marlins on Thursday night at Marlins Park. Braves starting pitcher Mike Foltynewicz was fantastic last night throwing six innings, giving up six hits, one run, no walks and four strikeouts. It’s funny how baseball and social media works…five days ago, people were saying put Folty in the pen or what’s wrong with him, now everyone is praising him. Folty will have a breakout season this year, yes he’ll have a couple bad games, but he will be good.
Run Support: Foltynewicz is like “what’s that?!?” Braves put up two runs in the 2nd inning and then six runs in the 7th inning.
Atlanta’s bullpen, which has been solid recently, gave up three runs late in this game. Jim Johnson came into the game in a non-save opportunity in the 9th and gave up a homer to Derek Dietrich.

Mock Draft: Twins grab McKay, Greene to Reds
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: So FanSided’s Ben Chase has already published two MLB Mock drafts and in each he’s had two different selections for the Braves. Right-handed pitcher Sam Carlson was selected by the Braves in his first mock draft and outfielder Jordan Adell in his second mock draft. MLB.com thinks right now the Braves will select MacKenzie Gore.
What this tells me is just like most of the past few years, it’s very unknown who will get picked in the top five of the MLB draft. That’s what makes the MLB draft so much more fun than any other professional league.
We’ll all find out on June 12, 2017, who the Braves will select, but until then let’s have fun debating who we’ll pick!
"5. BravesCallis: MacKenzie Gore, LHP, Whiteville (N.C.) HS. Some evaluators say Gore is better than Greene and Atlanta loves high school arms, so this would be a good match.Mayo: Gore. The Braves have consistently been associated with North Carolina high school outfielder Austin Beck, and that could very well happen, but they certainly haven’t shied away from high-ceiling arms and Gore’s stock has risen consistently all spring."

Mendez, Soroka impress with Double-A no-hit bids
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: Everyone is and should be very excited about these Braves youngsters…especially all these 19-year-olds. Included in those talks is 1st round selection from the 2015 MLB Draft Mike Soroka. The Canadian has shown great promise in only his third year being a professional pitcher. He’s already worked his way up to Double-A level with the Mississippi Braves.
Just like Kolby Allard, Max Fried, Sean Newcomb, Luiz Gohara, Patrick Weigel, Joey Wentz…Soroka could be the best of the group…so keep your eyes on all of these pitchers.
"As for Soroka, the Braves’ No. 4 prospect allowed just one hit and one walk in 6 2/3 innings after he carried a perfect game into the seventh inning for Double-A Mississippi. The 19-year-old right-hander punched out five and generated another 10 outs on the ground before departing the game with a season-high 89 pitches (54 strikes).“It was just kind of resetting, last few outings, I wouldn’t say I struggled, but sometimes things don’t go your way and you just got to keep battling through that,” Soroka told MiLB.com. “We just kind of set the game plan and seeing the glove and attack it with my best stuff. Balls were hit to guys and guys made really nice plays today and it was one of those days where everything kind of goes your way.”Your browser does not support iframes."
