Atlanta Braves News: Chop, Box, Gwinnett’s Changing Their Name, Johan Camargo Optioned
By Jeff Schafer
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: The Atlanta Braves defeated the Washington Nationals for the second straight game! After losing Freddie Freeman and that final game against the Blue Jays, I really wasn’t expecting this team to do this. Winning is fun! And beating the Nationals is even better.
The Braves bullpen pitched really well on Saturday evening against a very good lineup. The pen went 4.2 innings giving up no hits, no runs, one walk and two strikeouts. Bartolo Colon started the game and lasted just 4.1 innings, giving up seven hits, two runs (one earned run), no walks and six strikeouts. Definitely an improvement over his previous games.
The Braves lineup recorded nine hits and four walks. Dansby Swanson is now hitting above the .200 mark! Rio Ruiz hit his first home run! For a full recap, check ours out here.
Braves WIN 5-2
Side Note: See if you can spot Sean Rodriguez in the video the Braves posted. In uniform and no sling!

Cards trade Adams and cash to Braves for low-Class A player
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: John Coppolella pulled off another one! Coppy made a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals that sent Juan Yepez, a 19-year-old Rome Braves corner infielder, for Matt Adams and cash. Somehow, Coppy got cash out of this deal.
With Matt Adams joining the 25-man roster, the Braves had to make a move. That move was made this morning when they option infielder Johan Camargo to Gwinnett. Kind of interesting move here as somehow Emilio Bonifacio and Danny Santana are still on the roster. I’m a huge fan of Camargo, but if he wasn’t going to get playing time in Atlanta, I guess I’m okay with sending him down to Gwinnett.
"In a deal whose origin was Saturday morning and completed just before the start of Saturday night’s game, “Big City” was sent to the Braves for 19-year-old first baseman/third baseman Juan Yepez, a Venezuelan who was hitting .275 with one homer for Rome, Ga., of the low-Class A South Atlantic League. Cash considerations also will go to Atlanta, which will be taking on Adams’ $2.8 million contract. Yepez, who was signed as a 16-year-old for more than $1 million in 2014, will report to Class A Peoria. One of the top pinch hitters in the majors for the last four years, the lefthanded-batting Adams was hitting .292 with one homer overall and .316 as a pinch hitter this season. His best season with the Cardinals was in 2014 when he hit .288 with 15 homers and 68 runs batted in. In theory, he could have been somewhere in Saturday’s lineup inasmuch as he was 6-for-11 in his career against San Francisco’s Jeff Samardzija.Mozeliak said, “When you think about them losing Freddie Freeman, obviously they had a need. When you think of moving Carp to first, the dynamics of plate appearances (for Adams) changed quickly."

Gwinnett Braves plan to change team name for 2018 season, ask for fans help in naming contest
Tomahawk Take Editor’s Note: 2017 will be the final year of the Gwinnett Braves as they plan to change the nickname of the team starting in 2018. Fans will be given the opportunity to decide on the new name as voting opens on Monday.
I’ve seen mixed reviews about this on twitter — some aren’t in favor because of the history and having the Braves name, while others are jumping on board already throwing out new idea nicknames.
I think this will be a fun exercise and looking forward to seeing what the fans vote on. Now time to start thinking about what could be good and relevant to that area and the Braves organization.
"After years of pondering the move, general manager North Johnson and the Braves will announce a Name the Team contest to allow G-Braves fans and community members to determine what the Atlanta Braves’ Class AAA minor-league franchise will be called for the 2018 season and beyond. Fans will be able to vote beginning Monday on the team’s website, and submissions are open until 5 p.m. June 2."
"The fan whose entry leads to the team’s new name will receive a pair of 2018 season tickets. The four runners-up will receive merchandise with the new team name and logo."
"“The Atlanta Braves are still currently the only major league team that owns the majority of their minor league teams and a major part of the Braves footprint and the Braves expanding their brand throughout the Southeast is to continue to have minor league teams use the Braves name,” Johnson said. “When the team was in Richmond, that made great sense. If you were going to a Braves game, you knew you weren’t going to Atlanta. You were definitely going to Richmond."
