It was a strong day for the Atlanta Braves offense and defense as they take the series from the Reds.

What a game! The Atlanta Braves bats came alive today and it was perfect timing as it bailed out Julio Teheran – who gave up 7 earned runs – for his 5th win. Matt Adams continues to thrive with his new team with another homer. Ender Inciarte had another 5-hit day while Danny Santana (Yes! That guy!) had 4 hits and drove in 3 runs himself!

The Braves offense kicked off quickly as Inciarte hit a lead-off single in the 1st. He moved to 2nd on a wild pitch by Reds starter Amir Garrett. With 2 outs, Adonis Garcia reached base safely from a throwing error by Zack Cozart. This would place Garcia at second while allowing Inciarte to score the first run of the game.

13. 17. Final. 8. 61

In the bottom of the 1st, Teheran gave up a single to Jose Peraza, followed by a homer to Cozart to put the Reds up 2-1.

That lead would be short lived as the Braves immediately took it back. Garrett walked Tyler Flowers to start the inning. Then on a full-count, Santana cranked a home-run to left to put the Braves ahead.

Next, another player that got a rare start, Johan Camargo doubled to deep right center. After Teheran hit a sacrifice to 3rd, Inciarte hit his 2nd single of the day to score Camargo.

Game of Homers

In the 3rd, the Braves’ offense took Garrett out of the game for good. With 1 out, Matt Adams launch a big one far over the wall for a solo homer. So far, I think it would be safe to say the Braves are winning the Matt Adams trade.

Flowers then drew another walk before Santana hit a double. After that, Camargo was intentionally walked to load the bases. The next batter up was Teheran who hit a nice sac-fly to deep right which allowed Flowers to score.

Good right? Yeah, but up next was Inciarte, and he made it even better. On the 3rd pitch, he sent a no-doubter to right-center for a 3-run home-run. That would be the last of Garrett who was replaced by Jake Buchanan and got Dansby Swanson to ground out.

After that, Teheran started to show signs of trouble. In the bottom of the 3rd, the Reds threatened with 2 back-to-back singles but didn’t seize the opportunity.

Comebackers

The next inning they did though…

Eugenio Suarez was walked to start the bottom of the 4th before Tucker Barnhart doubled to right a batter later. Buchanan then lined his first career hit resulting in his first RBI.

What followed after was a rare sighting. With 2 outs, Cozart hit a ball that had the potential to be the 3rd out and an amazing catch by Inciarte. However, a miscue by Inciarte – looked like he dived just a bit early while closing his glove also early – which allowed the ball to bounce past him for a Cozart triple. This cut the Braves lead to 9-5.

Luckily the Braves offense remained consistent as they took back 2 runs the next inning. Santana shot a single to right before Camargo hit a grounder to score Flower (HBP). After Inciarte was intentionally walked, Swanson singled in another run.

Teheran would continue to struggle, giving up a 2-run homer to Arismendy Alcantara in the bottom of the 5th. He would manage to finish the inning to earn him the win.

In the bottom of the 6th, Jason Motte took over for the Braves. After getting the first out, he too gave up a home-run, a solo from Cozart, his 2nd for the day.

Ian Krol would take over for the next 2 innings and was fantastic. He faced the minimum for both innings while striking out 3.

The Man Named Ender

Ender Inciarte is a good player…nuff’ said.

After missing that potentially nice diving catch, he made up for it with not 1 but 2 nice plays in center. Also he went 5-5 today (plus an intentional walk) with career-high 5 RBIs.

In the top of the 9th, back-to-back doubles by Flowers and Santana scored another run. Nick Markakis came in to pinch-hit for Krol and would get hit with a pitch. That was when Inciarte lined his 5th hit of the day to left center to give the Braves a 13-8 lead.

Luke Jackson came in to finish up the game and the Braves win.

The Braves and Reds had a fun game today and it was even better with a win for Atlanta. Now they head home for a long home stand against the Phillies and Mets. Ender Inciarte continues to be good and I can see another Gold Glove for him.

With a rare start in RF, Danny Santana truly took advantage of it and I’m glad we kept him and not Emilio Bonifacio. Matt Adams continues to play the role of “Slugging 1st-Baseman” until Freddie Freeman comes back.

On Monday, Bartolo Colon face off against Nick Pivetta at 7:35 PM. This should be an interesting game as both starting pitchers are struggling this season.
