The Suitors

Who needs a bat this Summer?  Let’s see who is most in need:

WORST TEAM PRODUCTION – 1ST BASE

  • ANGELS:  -1.3 fWAR
  • MARINERS:  -1.1
  • YANKEES:  -0.9
  • RANGERS:  -0.6
  • INDIANS:  -0.2

These are the only ‘contenders’ with fWAR below zero as a team.

WORST TEAM PRODUCTION – DESIGNATED HITTER*

  • ANGELS:  -9.7
  • ASTROS:  -8.3
  • RED SOX:  -7.8
  • ROYALS:  -7.6
  • TIGERS:  -7.2
  • ORIOLES:  -5.7

* – for some reason, there is a defensive component to fWAR also factored in for DH (for inter-league play?).  This has been removed and only the offensive rating is shown here.

Also:  the White Sox are even with the Red Sox on this chart, but are widely believed to be readying for their own sell-off at the trade deadline.

What follows from here are estimates of team-by-team needs vs. possible returns via trade.

Though their need is greatest, I will eliminate the Angels for 2 reasons:  (1) it’s about Albert Pujols, and (2) their farm system is simply horrid.
