A nightmareish night for the Atlanta Braves as the Rockies put up a 17 run revenge attack after losing the night before

A tough game for the Atlanta Braves and especially for Mike Foltynewicz who gave up 8 total runs on 9 hits in only 4 innings. It was a game where each inning seemed like it would never end.

Foltynewicz struggled early in the game and the frustration just kept piling on throughout the night. In the 1st inning, he gave up a single to DJ LeMahieu , which was followed by a double to Nolan Arenado.

LeMahieu, who ended up at 3rd on the double, soon came home on a ground out by Gerardo Parra. Not long after, Mark Reynolds singled to center to score another run.

In the 2nd inning, Foltynewicz gave up a lead-off walk to Jonathan Lucroy and advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch.

Foltynewicz would strike out the next 2 straight batters which were easily the best part of his performance on this night. However, he walked Charlie Blackmon afterward and a single from LeMahieu then scored Lucroy. Folty then issued his 3rd walk of the inning to load the bases before Parra plated 2 more with a single.

An inning later, the Rockies were right back to where they left off. Luckily it was a shorter inning, however, a double from Lucroy and single from Trevor Story extended the Rockies’ lead to 6-0.

The Rockies Just Kept Hitting

The Braves FINALLY got their first base-runner of the game on an Ender Inciarte single to center. However, Brandon Phillips grounded into a double-play and Freddie Freeman struck out to end the inning.

In Foltynewicz’s final inning, he started with a double from LeMahieu. A single from Parra would finally take him out of the game, but the nightmare just continued for Atlanta.

Luke Jackson came in and it was not pretty at all, in fact just as bad. Jackson gave up a 3-run home-run to Reynolds. After walking Gonzalez, he gave up a 2-run homer to Story.

The Braves did have a chance to score in the 5th inning when Nick Markakis and Danny Santana each hit a single. They eventually moved over 1 on a ground-out by Ozzie Albies.

With 2 outs, up comes Dansby Swanson. On a 91 MPH slider, Swanson lined it short which was robbed by a flying Trevor Story. It was a stroke that would have scored 2 for the Braves, however, it turned into the 3rd out.

What In The World!?

At this point with a big lead and Folty out of the game, you would think the Rockies would cool down a bit, but Jackson just struggled.  He gave up back-to-back singles to Blackmon and LeMahieu – who the Braves can’t seem to get out. After that, Jackson gave up back-to-back doubles to Arenado and Parra to score 3 more.

A 14-0 lead by the Rockies…

Jackson got Reynolds to pop up before being replaced by Max Fried. Fried got 2 groundouts to end the inning.

Something To Go Home With

In the 6th, Fried grabbed a bat and went out to hit. Putting up a fight, he eventually drew a walk on 7 pitches.

Phillips then reached on an infield single before Freeman walked on a 10-pitch fight. Markakis then singled right down the center which scored 2, ending the shutout bid.

-Sigh-

More from Tomahawk Take

Fried seemed to be going well (and was the first pitcher to get a zero on the board in the Rockies’ half of an inning) until towards the end of the bottom 7th. A groundout, a single, a strikeout, and a double to deep right got 2 on base. On a 1-1 count, Story sent a curve ball to left for a 3-run homer to make it 17-2.

Rex Brothers made another appearance out of the bullpen and was fantastic, striking out the side.  Too little, too late.

Sadly, that was exactly how the Braves went down also.

Matt Adams (pinch-hitting), Santana and Albies all struck out to close a game that needed to end.

108. 2. 17. Final. 17

Next: Could We See Some Of These Guys Soon
