Atlanta’s farm system has no shortage of top pitching talent, one of Rome’s prospects came out on top in the South Atlantic League.

The Atlanta Braves minor league system is absolutely stacked with top-rated arms, and Joey Wentz rose to the top of a Rome Braves rotation that has an embarrassment of riches in its own right.

As part of the Sally League’s Annual All-Star Team selections, it was announced on Tuesday that Wentz is the 2017 Most Outstanding Pitcher.

Wentz has had an outstanding season through August for Rome, posting an 8-3 record. He holds a 2.70 ERA through 25 starts and has posted 146 strikeouts through only 126.2 innings. The 19-year-old has only hit one batter and given up a stingy four long balls so far.

Not to be forgotten, Rome’s Bryse Wilson was named the league’s Southern Division top right-handed pitcher. The team’s pitching coach Dan Meyer was also honored with a roster spot.

Wilson is 10-6 with a 2.52 ERA through 24 starts in 2017, and has a complete game shutout, which is a rarity at the low-A level. He’s racked up 126 strikeouts in 128.2 innings pitched and has only given up 36 walks and six home runs so far this season.

Scheduled to start for Rome at Greenville Drive Tuesday night, Wilson’s has the opportunity to improve his stats even more through the final week of the season. All of Rome’s games can be heard on 99.5 The Jock for free online and most can be viewed via MiLB TV. Tuesday night’s game is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m.

Both Wentz and Wilson has spent the 2017 season at or near the top of the league in most every major pitching statistic and, along with the rest of Rome’s staff, have kept Rome competitive and in the playoff race through the second half of play.
