Record-wise, it hasn’t been a particularly noteworthy season for the Braves, but the team’s new ballpark has impressed baseball fans far and wide.

For the first time since relocating to Atlanta from Milwaukee in 1966, the Atlanta Braves finally got a stadium built specifically for them with the move to SunTrust Park.

On Wednesday, Baseball Digest announced that the new home of the Braves has been named its 2017 Ballpark of the Year.

Baseball Digest cited the stadium’s ” fan-forward design incorporating the latest in social spaces and tech” among their reasoning for this year’s top ballpark honor.

After getting a good look at the new stadium during both the Yankees exhibition game and the home opener back in the spring, I penned a soft review of SunTrust Park here on Tomahawk Take (linked below), for anyone interested in my two cents.

“We are extremely honored to receive this award,” Atlanta Braves Chairman and CEO told BaseballDigest.com on winning the award. ” Our hope with this project was to have something for everyone inside SunTrust Park and to have a place for our fans to go before and after games. An award like this confirms we took the right path.”

SunTrust Park is part of a much larger development that includes the surrounding Battery, a collection of restaurants, bars, common green spaces, condominiums, offices and entertainment venues.

Located at the northwest corner of Interstate 75 and Interstate 285 in Cobb County, the SunTrust Park plan was originally unveiled to the public back in November of 2013. The project broke ground on September 16, 2014 and was completed just prior to the end of this year’s spring training. SunTrust Park holds 41,149 seated fans.
