Atlanta Braves pull off another walkoff win via Lane Adams’ homer
By John Le
Atlanta Braves fight and rallied to win 10-8 off a 11th-inning home-run by Lane Adams to conclude a special series against the Marlins.
R.A. Dickey was the man on the mound for the Atlanta Braves on Sunday and slid past the 1st inning with only a lead-off single. It was in the 2nd inning when things started to rattle.
Dickey gave up 3 back-to-back walks to Justin Bour, Brian Anderson, and Mike Aviles to start it off. It was one of those days where Dickey’s knuckle-balls were kind of… everywhere. Miguel Rojas then singled to left to score the Marlins their first run.
2 batters later, J.T. Realmuto dropped a double in right-center which scored Anderson and Aviles. Dickey would strike out Giancarlo Stanton before a ground-out from Christian Yelich to end the inning, but it gave the Fish an early 3-0 advantage.
Walks Kill
In the bottom of the 3rd, Rio Ruiz drew a walk on Marlins’ starter Odrisamer Despaigne to lead it off. Then, Ender Inciarte lined a single to center. With Ruiz at 3rd, Ozzie Albies hit a RBI single to right.

After Freddie Freeman flied out, Nick Markakis drew another walk to load the bases. On the first pitch, a 84 mph slider, Tyler Flowers singled to left, plating 2 more to tie the game.
Matt Adams fought off 8 pitches, eventually getting a walk to load it up again. Next was Johan Camargo, who also punished the 1st pitch for a 2-run single, giving the Braves their 1st lead at 5-3.
In the 4th, the Braves chased Despaigne out of the game after he gave up consecutive walks to Albies and Freeman. However, there were already 2 outs in the inning, and Markakis lined out to end that threat.
The lead would be short-lived for Atlanta, as the Marlins tied it in the next inning. 3 straight singles from Realmuto, Stanton, and Yelich off Dickey plated another run. After that was a ground-out from Tyler Moore, which scored another run to tie it up.
Marlins Add Late Damage
The game would go quiet until the 8th inning when the Marlins started to add some late runs that – at the time – looked like daggers.
Jose Ramirez had taken over the mound for the Braves and struck out the lead-off man. However Dee Gordon, pinch-hitting, launched a homer to right. That extended his hit streak despite being on his 2nd yard bird of the year.
But at a 5-6 deficit, Matt Wisler came on for the 9th and it wasn’t pretty.
Stanton lead off the inning with a big double to right center. He came around to score off of a double by Yelich. Pinch-hitting, Marcell Ozuna moved the runner over on a grounder.
A pitching change sent out Ian Krol and he gave up RBI sac-fly to Bour. Marlins up 8-5…
The Unreal Happened
9th inning, with the Braves trailing 3 runs, it looked like they were going to split the series with Miami.
The Marlins sent out Jarlin Garcia who fought Albies on 6 pitches before getting him to fly out.
Freeman then fought off 6 pitches before shooting one for a single. This was followed by a Markakis double to left. The Braves inched closer off a ground-out by Flowers which scored Freeman. 8-6…
Lane Adams got a walk before Marlins swapped Garcia for Javy Guerra. He gave up an infield hit to Camargo. With bases loaded and 2 outs, Rio Ruiz knocked a nasty-hopper through third for 2 runs to tie the game.
No way right? Well, yes way!
8 to 8… let’s keep playing.
Arodys Vizcaino pitched the 10th and 11th. The Marlins threaten in the 11th after Realmuto hit a lead-off single. After a fielder’s choice, Yelich moved to 3rd on a Tomas Telis double. The Braves intentionally walked Bour before striking out Anderson to end the inning.
Now it was the Braves turn to put up a threat. Flowers hit a 1-out single to left. Micah Johnson swapped places to pinch-run. However it didn’t matter who was running because on the very 1st pitch that he saw, Lane Adams shot a ball over the left field wall for the win.
The young ones did it again. A walk-off 2-run homer and the Braves take the series 3-1… with three walk-off wins in the process.
It wasn’t especially pretty (8 walks from the Marlins pitchers; 4 by the Braves – though only 1 after Dickey’s iffy inning), but it was a win. What a game!
