Braves battle, but fall to Marlins…6-5

We saw some positive things out of the Atlanta Braves on Friday night…such as Ozzie Albies batting leadoff and going 3-5 with two runs scored and one RBI, as well as Kurt Suzuki going 3-5 at the plate.  But than a few bad things…such as giving up six runs in the 6th inning and the 7th inning.

Braves starting pitcher Luiz Gohara actually pitched really well, but the box score won’t tell you just that.  He went six innings, giving up six hits, four runs, two walks and had six strikeouts.  The 6th inning was the one that got away from him.

Gohara’s four-seamer touched 100 mph and was averaging 98.1 mph.

The Marlins top of the order came to the plate with one out in the 6th inning.  Dee Gordon singled, then Giancarlo Stanton and Marcell Ozuna hit back-to-back doubles.  That put the score 5-2.

In the next inning, Gohara gave up a leadoff double to Tyler Moore and than walked Miguel Rojas.

It seems like we’re keeping these guys in one extra inning too long.  Is it just me?  I don’t know.  It happened with R.A. Dickey on Tuesday and Lucas Sims on Monday.

A.J. Minter came into the game to replace Gohara and gave up a single to Tomas Telis.  With the bases loaded, he got a huge strikeout to Dee Gordon.  Minter picked up his fourth hold and his ERA sits at 3.29 with the Atlanta Braves.

Dan Winkler came in after Minter, still with the bases loaded and now Stanton up.  Oh geez, here we go, right?

We than saw two singles, a walk and another single.  Just like that, the Braves were down 6-5.

Let’s get to the good stuff

That 1st inning was terrific, wasn’t it?  If you didn’t catch the start of the game, you missed one heck of a start.

More from Braves News

Ozzie Albies led off the game with a solo homer to right field.  Suzuki singled, Freddie Freeman walked, Nick Markakis struck out and then Lane Adams blasted a homer to left field.  Braves up 4-0!

Albies roped his sixth homer with the Atlanta Braves.  He went 3-5 on Friday and is now hitting .288.

Lane Adams hit his fifth homer with the Atlanta Braves.  He got the start in center field and went 1-4 with three RBIs.  He’s hitting a very respectable .280.

Adams got the start in center to give Ender Inciarte the night off.  He’s still not 100% after that thumb strain.  Brian Snitker told the media he holds having the night off on Friday will allow him to play the final two games of the season.

The Braves did load the bases in the 9th inning, but Matt Kemp grounded into a double play.  Of course, right?

Looking ahead, because why not?

The Braves now sit at 71-89 for the 2017 season.  They won’t get to the mark that I prediction…75 wins, but hey, still a shot at 73.

The fight for the top picks in the 2018 MLB draft is now upon us.  Who’s going to get a top 10 pick?  Let’s check the standings.

From worst to the Braves…

  1. San Francisco Giants – 62-97
  2. Detroit Tigers – 63-96
  3. Philadelphia Phillies – 65-95
  4. Chicago White Sox – 66-94
  5. Cincinnati Reds – 67-93
  6. New York Mets – 69-91
  7. San Diego Padres – 70-89
  8. Atlanta Braves – 71-89

Next: Do the Braves really need a big bat?

The Braves can not get worst than an 8th place draft slot.  They can however move up if the Mets and Padres win and the Braves lose the last two games.

Tell you what…even though the Braves lost on Friday, I’m pretty excited about the future of Ozzie Albies and Luiz Gohara!!
