Gwinnett Braves give update on future team name

The Atlanta Braves Triple-A affiliate announced back in May of 2017 that they will no longer be called the Gwinnett Braves following the season.  The reasoning behind this move was to distinguish the franchise from the MLB team.

Gwinnett’s General Manager North Johnson told media when this announcement came out…

"The Atlanta Braves are still currently the only major league team that owns the majority of their minor league teams and a major part of the Braves footprint and the Braves expanding their brand throughout the Southeast is to continue to have minor league teams use the Braves name…we’re in our ninth season, and our reality is a lot of confusion in the market with which team is which.  It’s mores for us…we’ve had folks, on multiple occasions, who had tickets for a Gwinnett Braves game and showed up at Turner Field.  It’s more to clean up confusion on the marketing side, mostly from our end."

The organization opened this up to the fans and asked for their help in choosing their new name.  Over the summer, six finalists were announced.

  • Gwinnett Buttons
  • Gwinnett Big Mouths
  • Gwinnett Gobblers
  • Gwinnett Hush Puppies
  • Gwinnett Lambchops
  • Gwinnett Sweet Teas

On Gwinnett’s social media page today, they gave us a special Halloween treat!  They released a quick 53-second video of their mascot Chopper trick or treating.  Within the video though, instead of receiving candy, Chopper is given “clues”.

These items given to Chopper are the nicknames of the six finalists.

Did this video tell us exactly which name was decided on?  Nope.  But it did end the video by saying the new name will be revealed in early December.

Next: Is John Hart involved or not?!

Take aways from the video: they held pretty long on that sweet tea at the end, didn’t they?

Also, did they need to make an edit or was that a clue when they went to the close up of the turkey?

I think my top two would be – Sweet Teas and Gobblers.  We’ll see shortly!
